One of the most common questions I receive from new parents is: when is the best time to photograph my baby? The honest answer is that every age has distinctive photographic qualities — and the 'best' age depends on what you want to capture.
This guide covers the specific photographic characteristics of each age and developmental stage, what to realistically expect at a session, and what kinds of images work best at different points in a child's growth.
Understanding what makes each stage unique helps parents plan sessions timed to what matters most to them — whether that's the folded-up newborn poses, the gummy six-month smiles, the walking wobbles at one, or the engaging personality of a three-year-old who has something to say about everything.
The optimal window for posed newborn photography — babies are sleepy, flexible and still in a curled-up newborn shape. After three weeks, this window begins to close. Book before birth to secure your slot.
Babies are awake, interactive and producing their first genuine smiles. Not yet mobile — they stay where you put them. Bright-eyed portraits at this stage are some of the most delightful in family photography.
Sitting independently but not yet crawling — often called the 'sitter stage'. Babies are curious, expressive and cooperative. One of the most popular milestone ages.
Pulling up, cruising furniture, early walking — chaotic documentary photographs of a baby in full movement. More patience required, much more personality visible.
Strong opinions, variable cooperation, extraordinary personality. Sessions at this age work best with minimal structure and a lot of play. Expect the unexpected — expect some of the best photographs of any age.
School-age children bring humour, engagement and usually a genuine enthusiasm for being photographed. They can be directed, they tell jokes, and their personality is fully in the frame.
