Autumn is consistently the most requested season for portrait photography in the UK — and for good reason. The light is warm and directional, the foliage creates natural colour saturation in the background, and the cooler temperatures make subjects genuinely comfortable during sessions. Here is how to make the most of it.
By late September the sun has dropped to an angle that creates long, golden, directional light for a much longer proportion of the day than in summer. The "golden hour" effect that lasts forty minutes in June lasts two or three hours in October. This means more flexibility for session timing — sessions at 2pm in November can produce light equivalent to a midsummer golden-hour session. Overcast autumn days produce beautifully even, soft diffused light that flatters all subjects.
Deciduous woodland at peak colour (typically late October to early November in England) is the classic autumn portrait environment. But it is not the only option — open parkland with scattered mature trees, riverside paths with golden reflected light, and urban settings with plane trees all produce strong autumn backdrops. The best autumn locations combine trees at different stages of turning so that the background includes a range of gold, orange, and green rather than a single flat colour.
Autumn clothing choices almost photograph themselves — camel, burnt orange, rust, forest green, burgundy, and deep teal all harmonise naturally with autumnal backgrounds. Avoid matching the background too precisely (an orange jumper against orange trees results in a subject that disappears into the scene) — choose a colour adjacent in tone but different in hue. Layers look natural and allow variety across the session.
Peak autumn colour in England varies by year and region — typically mid- to late-October in the north, late October to early November in the south. I monitor local woodland colours from mid-September and can advise on optimal timing. Sessions at dawn and in the last three hours of afternoon light consistently produce the best results.
