The consistent answer for outdoor portraiture is: the two hours after sunrise and the 90 minutes before sunset. During these "golden hours," the sun is low in the sky, its light travels through more atmosphere and loses its harsh intensity, and the resulting warm, directional light is flattering to faces and skin tones. Subjects can look toward or slightly toward the light source without squinting, and the warm amber quality of the light creates a cohesive, appealing image palette.
The middle of the day — roughly 11am to 3pm in summer — produces the most challenging outdoor light for portrait photography: harsh downward sun that creates unflattering shadows under eyes and nose, makes subjects squint, and creates blown-out highlights on the tops of heads. Portrait photographers either work in full open shade during these hours or avoid scheduling sessions then altogether.
It depends what you want from the images:
Late spring (May–June): Long evenings (sunset after 9pm in Cambridge), warm but not intense temperatures, fresh green leaves on trees, wildflowers, cow parsley in hedgerows. Light is at its most reliably warm for evening sessions. This is arguably the best overall season for outdoor portrait work in England.
Summer (July–August): Very long golden hour windows — sunset as late as 9:30pm. Heat can be an issue for comfort; grassed areas may be brown and dry in hot summers. Late evening sessions work best.
Early autumn (September–October): Glorious colour in turning foliage, still good light through mid-October. Temperature is comfortable. This is wedding and engagement season for outdoor imagery partly because of the colour palette available.
Winter (November–March): Golden hour arrives at 3–4pm, making scheduling easier for working clients than late-evening summer sessions. A clear winter's afternoon with low sun in bare-tree woodland is beautiful in its own distinct way. Cold temperatures require client preparation; snow sessions produce exceptional images on the rare occasions they're achievable.
Overcast grey days are not the enemy of portrait photography that many people assume. Soft, diffused overcast light is actually ideal for portraits: no squinting, no harsh shadows, perfectly even skin tones, saturated colours. The visual look is cooler and quieter than golden-hour warmth, but it's consistently beautiful. The main exception: heavy rain is difficult and grey flat skies in winter can look bleak. A dry overcast spring or autumn day produces excellent portrait light.
