The most common concern I hear from families before a session is: "What if the children won't cooperate?" or "I'm terrible in front of a camera." Both are very common — and neither actually prevents beautiful family photographs. The secret is not cooperation. It's movement, activity, and the absence of pressure.
Portrait sessions that begin with "everyone stand together and smile" produce exactly the stiff, uncomfortable images that nobody wants on their walls. I never ask families to pose. Instead, I suggest activities — a walk, a game, exploring an interesting location — and photograph what happens. The laughter is real because it happens naturally, not on instruction.
Young children are at their best in the morning — rested, fed, and not yet tired from the day. I generally recommend sessions starting 60–90 minutes after breakfast for families with children under 5. Avoid scheduling sessions during nap times or in the late afternoon when small children are most likely to be fractious.
A beloved toy, a bag of snacks, a football — something that belongs to the child's world rather than the photography world. Objects that children care about create natural engagement and genuine expressions. A 4-year-old who is absorbed in explaining their favourite dinosaur to you is infinitely more photogenic than a 4-year-old who has been asked to stand still.
Choose clothing that you're comfortable in — not your best outfit that you're afraid to muddy, not something brand new that feels unfamiliar. Co-ordinate colours loosely (a palette of 2–3 tones) rather than matching exactly. Layers work well for unpredictable British weather and add visual interest. Avoid large logos, very busy patterns, or words on clothing.
Arrive a few minutes early so nobody is rushed. Let the children explore the location before the session formally begins — familiar ground is more comfortable ground. And remember: a child crying or running in the wrong direction is not a failed session. Some of the most honest, beautiful family images I make involve someone completely refusing to cooperate.
