Golden hour — that brief window before sunset when the light turns warm, horizontal and directional — shifts dramatically through England's year. In June it falls at 9pm; in December it barely exists. Understanding the seasonal calendar helps you plan sessions around the best light in any month.
Golden hour is not strictly an hour — it is a quality of light that occurs in the period between roughly ninety minutes and twenty minutes before sunset. It is characterised by warm colour temperature (the sun appears orange rather than white), low angle (the light comes horizontally rather than from overhead), and soft quality (the atmosphere filters the harshness out of direct sun).
These three characteristics together produce the most flattering natural light for portrait photography: warmth in skin tones, directional light that creates shape and depth in faces, and softness that eliminates harsh shadows. It is no coincidence that professional photographers plan their outdoor sessions around this window.
| Month | Sunset (approx.) | Golden hour starts | Session window |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 4:00pm | 2:30pm | 2:30–4:00pm |
| February | 5:00pm | 3:30pm | 3:30–5:00pm |
| March | 6:00pm | 4:30pm | 4:30–6:00pm |
| April | 8:00pm | 6:30pm | 6:30–8:00pm |
| May | 8:45pm | 7:15pm | 7:15–8:45pm |
| June | 9:20pm | 7:50pm | 7:50–9:20pm |
| July | 9:10pm | 7:40pm | 7:40–9:10pm |
| August | 8:20pm | 6:50pm | 6:50–8:20pm |
| September | 7:00pm | 5:30pm | 5:30–7:00pm |
| October | 6:00pm | 4:30pm | 4:30–6:00pm |
| November | 4:15pm | 3:00pm | 3:00–4:15pm |
| December | 3:55pm | 2:30pm | 2:30–3:55pm |
Times are approximate for central England. Sunset times shift by 20–30 minutes between north and south England.
Summer golden hour is long but often hazy. In June and July, sunset at 9pm means the light is at its most dramatic in the final twenty minutes — a narrow window in which to capture the full warmth. The long approach compensates photographers by giving a predictable buildup.
Winter golden hour is brief and intense. In November and December, the low sun reaches its flattest angle of the year for the final hour before setting, creating extraordinarily dramatic, horizontal light. A 3pm session on a clear December afternoon can produce golden hour images of remarkable quality — but the window closes fast.
Autumn golden hour — particularly October — offers the best combination of warmth, angle, duration and colour context. The light is lower than in summer, the colour palette of the season adds depth, and the window is long enough to work comfortably across a full family session.
The twenty minutes after sunset — called blue hour — produces a different but equally beautiful quality of light. The sky turns a deep, saturated blue and any artificial lights (street lamps, lit café signs, car headlights) create warm contrast. Blue hour is particularly useful for couples and portrait photography in urban settings.
Blue hour requires a camera with strong low-light capability to take full advantage of the conditions. Phone cameras have improved significantly here, but professional cameras with wide-aperture lenses handle blue hour more reliably.
