After booking, most photographers will send a detailed pre-session guide covering what to wear, how to prepare, what to bring, and what will happen on the day. Read this properly — it will answer most questions and often includes location and parking information. If you have questions not covered in the guide, don't save them for the day; email your photographer in the days beforehand.
On the day itself, build in time. If you're travelling to an outdoor location, allow for parking, walking, and a few minutes to arrive composed rather than rushed. Sessions that start late because of travel delays lose the best light and the most relaxed early moments that establish the session's overall energy.
The first few minutes of a professional session typically involve very little actual shooting. You'll be introduced to the location or studio, asked how you're feeling, invited to look around, and the photographer will begin setting up while chatting. This is intentional — it's warmup time. Don't expect to start shooting the moment you arrive. The camera typically appears after you've settled briefly.
Some photographers show you a few test images in the first few minutes — partly technical calibration, partly to show you early results and settle any anxiety. Many clients report that seeing even one good image of themselves early in a session transforms their confidence for the rest of it.
Expect to be directed. A professional photographer will tell you how to stand, where to look, and how to move. You don't need to know anything about posing — follow the direction and give feedback if something feels strained or unnatural. The best photographers adapt their direction in response to how you move and what works for your specific physicality rather than applying fixed poses rigidly.
Expect variety. Professional portrait sessions typically move through multiple setups, locations (if outdoor), and emotional registers — some shots more formal, some more relaxed and candid. This variety in the final gallery is intentional.
After the session, your photographer will cull (select) and edit the best images from everything captured. Turnaround time varies by photographer and session type: portrait sessions typically arrive within 1–3 weeks; weddings typically within 4–8 weeks. Images are usually delivered via an online gallery link where you can download files and, optionally, order prints. Clarify the exact delivery timeline and format before booking.
