There are no tricks to being photogenic — but there are a handful of practical things that consistently make a difference between photographs that are lovely and photographs that are extraordinary.
After photographing many weddings across the UK, I've noticed clear patterns in what helps brides feel relaxed, look natural and create images they'll love forever. These are my most useful tips.
None of them require any special skill, expensive preparation or dramatic changes — they're simply the things that help everything come together beautifully on the day.
Nothing affects how you look and feel more than sleep. Try to be in bed by 10pm the night before. Tired eyes and stressed expressions are the hardest things to fix in post-processing — and the easiest things to prevent.
Have a proper breakfast and keep snacks available during the morning. Low blood sugar leads to tension in the body and face. Looking nourished and energised shows in photographs.
Morning prep photographs are important, so don't rush them. Schedule hair and makeup to finish at least 30–45 minutes before you need to leave. Rushing creates stress that shows in photographs.
Wear your wedding shoes for a few hours ahead of time. Comfortable feet mean a natural walk, relaxed posture and no grimacing when you're supposed to be smiling.
During the ceremony, try to keep your hands relaxed and your bouquet slightly lower than feels natural — it opens up your face. Look at your partner during vows, not at the officiant.
Don't think about the camera. Talk to your partner, whisper something private, laugh at something silly. The best couple portraits happen when you forget I'm there.
