Newcastle upon Tyne
Natural and cinematic portrait photography across Newcastle — Jesmond Dene's ancient woodland, the Quayside's iconic bridges, Leazes Park, and the Northumberland coast and countryside beyond.
Newcastle upon Tyne has a portrait photography environment as distinctive as any UK city. The Quayside — the Victorian and Edwardian riverside with its seven bridges spanning the Tyne to Gateshead — provides an instantly recognisable urban backdrop. Jesmond Dene, the Victorian wooded valley running north from the city, provides intimate woodland and waterfall portrait settings ten minutes from the centre. And the Northumberland coast and countryside — some of England's finest — is within 30–40 minutes.
I photograph all portrait types in Newcastle: personal branding and professional headshots, family and couple portraits, creative and editorial sessions, and actor portfolios. My approach is natural and relaxed — I work to authentic expression and adapt each session to the specific location's light and character.
I cover Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, and the wider North East — including the Northumberland coast, the Hadrian's Wall corridor, and the North Pennines AONB.
Jesmond Dene — the Victorian wooded valley gifted to the city by Lord Armstrong (of Cragside fame) in 1884 — is Newcastle's finest outdoor portrait location. The gorge of the Ouseburn, the Armstrong Bridge, the walled water garden, the pet farm meadow and the ancient oak and ash woodland provide layered portrait environments across a single manageable walk. The Dene is ten minutes by bike or bus from the city centre and excellent in all seasons.
Newcastle Quayside — the Victorian and Edwardian commercial waterfront, now bars, restaurants and apartments — with the six bridges spanning to Gateshead is the city's most photographed urban portrait backdrop. The Millennium Bridge (the world's first tilting bridge), the Tyne Bridge, the High Level Bridge, and the Swing Bridge all form background elements of genuine distinction. The Sage Gateshead and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art on the southern shore extend the portrait circuit.
Leazes Park — the Victorian park immediately north-west of the city centre, adjacent to St James' Park — has a formal lake, Italian garden pergola, and mature elm-and-plane-tree avenues. Less visited than Jesmond Dene, it provides quieter urban-park portrait conditions with good light in the afternoon on its south-facing lake shore.
The Ouseburn Valley — the creative quarter east of the city centre, with its tall Byker viaduct, converted brick warehouses, city farm, and independent arts venues — provides an urban-industrial portrait environment with Newcastle's specific creative and cultural character. Excellent for personal branding, musician, and creative professional portrait sessions.
Bamburgh Castle — the Anglo-Saxon fortress on the Northumberland coast, 50 miles north of Newcastle — provides one of England's most dramatic portrait backdrops: the castle on its volcanic crag above two miles of wide, white dune-backed beach. Alnmouth, Craster, Holy Island (Lindisfarne), and Dunstanburgh Castle are other Northumberland coast portrait locations used for Newcastle sitters wanting a landscape backdrop.
Durham — 15 miles south of Newcastle, with its World Heritage cathedral and castle peninsula above the River Wear — provides an ecclesiastical urban portrait backdrop of European significance accessible from Newcastle within 30 minutes. The riverbanks below the cathedral and the narrow medieval streets provide portrait settings of exceptional historic depth.

Personal branding and professional headshots, family and couple portraits, creative and editorial sessions, actor and performer portfolios, and corporate team photography. Newcastle's range — from Jesmond Dene woodland to the Quayside bridges to the Northumberland coast — gives exceptional variety.
Yes — Bamburgh, Alnmouth, Holy Island, and Dunstanburgh are all used for extended Newcastle-area portrait sessions wanting a dramatic landscape backdrop. Travel to Northumberland coast locations is included in the Extended Session package.
The Quayside and the Ouseburn valley are the strongest for personal branding — the bridges, the Baltic, the Sage and the Ouseburn's creative district provide contemporary urban Newcastle character. For a warmer, greener professional look, Jesmond Dene's woodland edge in spring or autumn is an excellent alternative.
