Portrait Photography
Richmond offers extraordinary portrait settings within easy reach of central London. Richmond Park — at 2,500 acres the largest of the Royal Parks — provides sweeping open landscapes with ancient pollarded oaks and over 650 free-roaming deer. The Isabella Plantation's woodland garden is spectacular in spring. Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers the iconic Palm House, Japanese Pagoda, and a vast arboretum full of specimen trees.
Ham House and Garden (National Trust) — a remarkably preserved seventeenth-century Stuart house — provides formal garden structure: cherry avenue, walled kitchen garden, and ha-ha views across Petersham Meadows to the Thames. The Richmond Hill terrace is protected by its own Act of Parliament as a view of unique scenic importance — Turner painted the Thames panorama from here repeatedly. The Thames towpath from Richmond Bridge offers riverside reflections at any season. I cover Richmond TW9–TW10, Kew, Ham, Petersham, Twickenham, Kingston, East Sheen, and Mortlake.

Ham House & Garden (NT)
Seventeenth-century Stuart house with cherry avenue, walled kitchen garden, and ha-ha views across to the Thames and Petersham Meadows.
Petersham Meadows & Thames Riverside
Thames-side meadows between Ham House and Richmond Bridge — flat pastoral landscape with sweeping river views.
Richmond Hill Terrace
Turner's Thames panorama — the only view in England protected by a specific Act of Parliament. Outstanding for early-morning portrait sessions.
Richmond Green & Town Centre
Richmond Green's spacious village-green setting and the surrounding period townscape provide a more relaxed urban portrait option.
Autumn (October–November) is spectacular — golden oak trees, deer in the bracken, and misty early-morning light. Spring is also outstanding, with bluebells and fresh foliage. Winter portraits in Richmond Park have a striking minimalist quality.
