Second Shooting — Opportunities for Developing Wedding Photographers
Second shooting is the most effective way for a developing wedding photographer to gain the real-world experience that no workshop or course can replicate — shooting a full wedding day alongside a lead photographer, contributing meaningfully to a real client’s gallery, and developing the speed, compositional instinct and emotional intelligence that only comes from doing the job for real.
Yana Skakun Photography occasionally takes on second shooter applications from photographers who are serious about developing a wedding photography career and who have the technical foundation to contribute immediately. Second shooters are not assistants or students — they are expected to produce gallery-quality images from day one, working at a professional standard under Yana’s direction and brand values.
What I Look for in a Second Shooter
Strong technical foundations (comfortable with manual exposure, fast lens changes, shooting in low light without flash), a documentary instinct (ability to anticipate moments rather than simply react to them), a professional and unobtrusive presence with clients and guests, and a portfolio that demonstrates genuine photographic sensibility rather than simply technical competence. Applications with a portfolio link that does not meet this standard will not receive a response.
Applying to Second Shoot
Applications are accepted year-round but positions are limited. Successful applications typically begin with a paid mentoring session to establish whether the working relationship and aesthetic are a good fit, followed by observation at a paid wedding, and then progression to active second shooting on appropriate weddings. The process is honest and structured to benefit both parties. Send your portfolio and a brief introduction to apply.
