Practical advice to help you feel relaxed, prepared and genuinely excited for your photography session.
Get in TouchSession Guide
Being prepared for your photography session makes an enormous difference to how relaxed you feel on the day — and relaxed clients produce beautiful photographs. The more clearly you understand what to expect, the less mental energy you'll spend worrying on the day, and the more you can simply be present and enjoy the experience.
I send every client a detailed session briefing document when they book. But here are the most important practical points that I find make the biggest difference to how sessions actually go — the things clients wish they'd known, and the things I'd tell you if we were having coffee the week before.
The most important thing you can do before a session is this: let go of the expectation that it needs to be perfect. The best photographs I've ever made have been at sessions where something unexpected happened, where someone laughed at the wrong moment, where a child ran in an unexpected direction. Those imperfect moments are the real ones.
Golden hour (45–90 min before sunset) produces the most beautiful light. Book accordingly — even if it means a later session. Overcast days often produce better portraits than bright midday sun.
Don't over-brief children — it builds anxiety. Tell them simply they're going for a walk to take some photos with a nice person. Bring small snacks for toddlers. Plan around nap times.
Almost everyone is nervous in front of a camera, and I know it. My first 15 minutes with every client are specifically designed to make you forget the camera exists. Trust the process.
Not sure where to shoot? Tell me your style preference (woodland, water, urban, open countryside) and I'll suggest specific locations near you with notes on their best light and timing.
Water, especially in summer. A jacket or wrap if the session runs into the evening. Comfortable shoes for any walking. Spare outfit for children. Nothing else is necessary.
Relaxed movement, natural prompts, laughter. Not rigid poses, barked instructions or uncomfortable 'smile at the camera' moments. Your session will feel much more like a walk with a friend.
