Browse wedding photographers for long enough and you'll encounter terms like 'documentary', 'editorial', 'fine art', 'reportage', 'classical' and 'lifestyle' applied to photography that looks very different from one to the next.
These aren't just buzzwords — they describe genuinely different approaches to capturing your day. Understanding them will help you identify what you actually love in a portfolio and communicate more clearly with potential photographers.
My own style sits closest to documentary-editorial: led by real moments and genuine emotion, but thoughtful about composition, light and beauty throughout.
The photographer is a fly on the wall — capturing real moments without direction or interruption. Emphasis on emotion, spontaneity and storytelling. Minimal posing, maximum authenticity.
More directed and stylised — portraits are carefully composed and lit, with attention to setting and mood. Results look closer to magazine photography. Requires more time set aside for portraits.
Often characterised by a distinctive, consistent aesthetic — soft tones, intentional grain, dreamy light. Fine art photographers typically have a very individual visual signature.
Formal group portraits, posed family photos, clear coverage of all key moments. More structured and choreographed. Well-suited to couples who want a comprehensive record above all.
Somewhere between documentary and editorial — naturally posed scenarios that feel candid without being fully unguided. Common for portrait and family sessions.
I work predominantly in a documentary-editorial style: spending most of the day unobtrusive and story-led, then spending 20–30 minutes on intentional, beautifully lit couple portraits that stand apart from the rest.
