Edinburgh is built on a series of volcanic hills and ridges — the Castle Rock, Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill, Blackford Hill — giving the city a topographic drama matched by no other UK city. The Old Town, built on the ridge running east from the Castle, has a medieval skyline of tenements, kirks and closes that creates architectural portrait settings of genuine historic character. The Georgian New Town below, with its broad streets, crescents and formal gardens, offers a different, more ordered urban aesthetic. And within the city boundary lies Holyrood Park — 640 acres of volcanic upland, including Arthur's Seat (251m) and its associated crags, lochs and ancient terracing — which gives Edinburgh outdoor portrait settings of a genuinely wild, Highland character accessible without leaving the city.
Arthur's Seat is the dominant summit of the ancient volcanic complex occupying Holyrood Park. At 251 metres, it gives 360-degree views over Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, the Pentland Hills and (on clear days) the Highland mountains to the north. The ascent from Holyrood Palace takes 45 minutes on the main path. For portrait photography, the value of Arthur's Seat lies not primarily in the summit itself but in the varied settings on the approach — the ancient terracing on the lower slopes, the Gutted Haddie ridge with its exposed basalt columns, and the two lochs (Dunsapie and St Margaret's) that catch the sky. Golden hour on Arthur's Seat in late spring, with the city below and the Firth glittering in the distance, is among the finest portrait settings I have worked in the UK.
The Royal Mile connects Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse along the ridge of the Old Town. Its 30+ closes (covered alleyways) running north and south from the main street contain some of the most atmospheric portrait settings in any UK city — narrow stone passages, worn steps, iron lamplight and glimpses of the sky. Advocates' Close, with its view of the Scott Monument and Princes Street Gardens, is particularly fine as a portrait setting. The Grassmarket, below the castle walls, retains a medieval market character. Victoria Street, with its curved upper and lower levels, brightly coloured shopfronts and cobbled surface, is perhaps the most immediately photogenic street in Edinburgh. All of these settings work best in early morning (before tourist crowds) or in golden-hour evening light.
Calton Hill at the east end of Princes Street is a low volcanic summit cluttered with monuments — the National Monument (Edinburgh's unfinished Parthenon), the Nelson Monument, the City Observatory, and the Dugald Stewart Monument. The views from Calton Hill across to the Castle, the Old Town skyline, and Salisbury Crags are among the most frequently photographed in Scotland. For portrait photography, the monuments provide strong graphic elements while the panoramic city view provides context and scale. The hill is best for photography at golden hour when the western light warms the Castle and the Old Town.
Dean Village is a former milling community in a deep valley carved by the Water of Leith, just 15 minutes' walk from Princes Street. Despite its central location, the village feels entirely removed from the city — grey stone mills, the Dean Bridge arching across the gorge 32 metres above, and the tree-lined river path create a setting of genuine quiet and character. The Water of Leith Walkway follows the river downstream through Stockbridge to Leith — a continuous 12-mile riverside path providing varied portrait settings (woodland, weir, city edge) accessible on foot.
