Spring is the most photographically rewarding season in the UK — bluebells, cherry blossom, green fields after winter, and golden evening light that arrives early enough for young children. But timing is everything, and the windows are narrow.
Cherry blossom in England typically peaks in mid-to-late April — and the full bloom lasts between 7 and 14 days in any given location, sometimes less if there is wind or rain. Most urban parks with mature cherry trees reach peak blossom around the third or fourth week of April, though this varies by 2–3 weeks from year to year. A blossom family session requires timing flexibility — ideally booking a tentative date with the ability to move based on the trees. I monitor blossom trees near regular locations from late March each year.
English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) bloom in ancient woodland from late April to mid-May — typically around 25 April to 12 May in central England. The carpet of blue-violet flowers under bare-canopied trees, before the leaves fully close the canopy, creates one of the most distinctive photographic environments in England. Bluebell woods fill up on weekends — early morning sessions (7am–9am) offer the flowers at their freshest, the light at its best, and the woods close to empty.
Spring palette: sage green, soft yellow, white, dusty rose, cream, and navy all photograph beautifully against blossom and green landscapes. Avoid pure bright white (it blows out in open light), heavy pattern, and very dark colours in open bright conditions. Light, tonal families wearing coordinating pastels or earthy neutrals against spring landscapes produce images with a natural, timeless quality.
Golden hour in May arrives around 8pm — excellent for older children and adults. For families with young children, the period 5pm–7pm provides warm, directional late afternoon light without the tired, hungry variables of an 8pm start. Overcast spring days provide beautiful, even light all day — do not reschedule simply because it is not sunny.
Spring & Bluebell Family Sessions
I photograph seasonal family sessions across Cambridgeshire and East Anglia — spring blossom, bluebell woods, and golden summer evenings. Spring sessions book early.
