What you wear to an engagement shoot shapes the mood, the colour palette, and the feel of every image. You don't need to dress formally — but you do need to think about it. Here's a practical guide by season.
The Universal Rules First
- Avoid busy patterns and small logos — they distract the eye and date badly
- Coordinate, don't match — wearing identical outfits reads as costume; wearing complementary tones looks intentional
- Wear what you're comfortable in — anxiety about an outfit shows in photographs
- Bring a change — a second outfit gives you variety within the same session
- Consider your backdrop — a green field backdrop rewards warm terracotta and cream; a stone city backdrop rewards navy, burgundy, and grey
Spring
Spring light is soft and flattering but the weather is unpredictable. Layer light fabrics you can add or remove. Pale florals, soft greens, and warm whites work beautifully against blossom and new growth. Avoid very dark colours in bright spring light — they absorb heat and create heavy contrast.
Summer
Summer golden hour (the hour before sunset) is the ideal time to shoot. Lightweight linens, soft cotton dresses, and relaxed tailoring suit the warmth. Jewel tones — deep blue, terracotta, mustard — photograph beautifully in warm evening light. Avoid pure white, which blows out easily in bright sun.
Autumn
The most forgiving season for clothing choices. Rich autumn tones — burnt orange, ochre, burgundy, forest green — complement the foliage directly. Knitwear, coats, and scarves are both practical and photogenic. An oversized wrapped coat photographed against fallen leaves is one of the most consistently beautiful images in engagement photographs.
Winter
Winter shoots require warm layers but reward beautiful textures — wool coats, cashmere, velvet. Deep jewel tones and rich neutrals work well against bare trees and low-contrast winter light. An umbrella used as a prop (and a practical tool) in light rain or mist adds movement and a genuinely British aesthetic.
Hair and Makeup
Wear what you'd wear on a good night out — put together but recognisably you. Heavy wedding-day makeup on an engagement shoot can look incongruous in informal settings and creates a mismatch with your personality in the photographs. Natural, polished is the target.
Not sure what to wear? I'll advise based on your location and the time of year.
