Engagement photography in the UK ranges from £150 to over £800. That's a wide range. What you're actually buying at each price point differs significantly, and the cheapest option is not always the right one for your circumstances.
What's Included at Different Price Points
£150–£300: Entry Level
Usually newer photographers building a portfolio, photography students, or second shooters offering independent sessions. The photography can be genuinely good — early-career photographers often work harder per session. The risk is inconsistency and limited post-processing quality. Gallery turnaround can be slow.
This range is appropriate for couples who want casual portraits for social media but don't need the images to serve as high-quality lasting keepsakes.
£300–£550: Mid-Range
Established photographers with a consistent style and solid editing. Usually includes 1.5–2 hours of shooting time, 40–80 edited images, and an online gallery. This is the most value-dense range for most couples. You're getting a professional result without paying for a photographer whose reputation carries significant overhead.
£550–£800+: Premium
Photographers with strong editorial or fine art portfolios, typically booked for weddings in the same tier. At this price point you're often booking someone whose engagement session work matches their wedding portfolio quality exactly. If aesthetic consistency across your pre-wedding and wedding images matters to you, this alignment has value.
When Engagement Photography Is Free
Many photographers include an engagement shoot in their wedding packages at no additional cost. If you've booked a wedding photographer, check whether an engagement session is already included before booking separately. This is one of the most commonly missed inclusions when couples review what they've contracted for.
What Affects the Price
- Location travel fees — sessions requiring travel beyond a 30-mile radius usually attract a mileage charge
- Session length — standard is 1–2 hours; extended sessions cost more
- Turnaround time — rush delivery (under one week) sometimes carries a premium
- Print products — prints, albums, or canvases are always additional to the session fee
Standalone vs Package Included
A standalone engagement session booked with a photographer you're not also using for your wedding is generally less expensive than the same session as an add-on from your wedding photographer. The reverse is also sometimes true — wedding photographers discount or include sessions for contracted weddings because the relationship value is high.
