Portraits, family and engagement photography in one of England's finest medieval market towns. Bridge End Garden, the turf maze and centuries of pargeted plasterwork await.
England's Medieval Gem
Saffron Walden is, by any measure, one of England's greatest small towns. The oldest settlement in Essex, its medieval prosperity from the saffron and wool trades built a collection of domestic architecture — timber-framed, pargeted, gabled — that has survived largely intact for five or six centuries. Walking Market Hill on a clear morning, you are simultaneously in 2026 and 1540.
This historical weight makes Saffron Walden exceptional for photography. The pargeted plasterwork of the Sun Inn (c.1676) with its extraordinary figurative decoration. The Bridge End Garden — seven walled enclosures, a Victorian hedge maze and a Dutch garden, all freely accessible. The turf maze on the common, one of only eight surviving in England. The parish church that should by rights be a cathedral. All within ten minutes' walk of each other.
I cover the full Uttlesford district — Saffron Walden, Great Dunmow, Thaxted, Clavering and the surrounding villages — bringing the same care and local knowledge I have built across years of fieldwork in north Essex. For families moving to the area, for couples planning to marry here, and for individuals who simply want to be photographed in a truly exceptional English setting, this is consistently one of my most recommended areas.
Where We Shoot
Saffron Walden's Grade II* listed Victorian walled garden — seven distinct sections including a rose garden, hedge maze, Dutch garden and kitchen garden, all immaculately maintained by the local council. One of the finest small formal gardens in Essex and an extraordinary photography location.
One of only eight ancient turf mazes in England, dating from medieval times, cut into the common near the town. A unique and deeply historic feature that anchors Saffron Walden in time and creates a remarkable contextual backdrop for portrait sessions.
The late Perpendicular church is one of the grandest parish churches in England — a cathedral in scale for a market town, built with the wealth of the medieval wool and saffron trades. The churchyard and exterior provide exceptional architectural backdrops.
Saffron Walden's ancient market place is surrounded by some of the finest medieval and Jacobean domestic architecture in East Anglia. The pargeted plasterwork of the Sun Inn, the timber-framed buildings of King Street and the Georgian brick of Castle Street offer tremendous variety.
English Heritage's magnificent Jacobean mansion just south of Saffron Walden (formal admission required) provides extraordinary grounds photography for those who book specifically for the estate setting. The Adam-designed reception rooms and formal parkland by Capability Brown are exceptional.
The wide chalk grassland common on the eastern edge of town, with views to the Audley End estate, is freely accessible and provides open, airy settings for family sessions. The surrounding north Essex countryside — ancient hedgerows, pastures and fields of wildflowers — is also available for those who prefer a rural backdrop.
