Weddings, families and portraits in Royston — Wimpole Estate, Therfield Heath, and the south Cambridgeshire countryside.
Royston Photography
Royston sits on the ancient chalk downland where Hertfordshire meets South Cambridgeshire — a border town on the Icknield Way with Therfield Heath above it, Wimpole's great landscape park 6 miles north, and the chalk stream villages of Ashwell, Barkway, and Reed in the rolling countryside around it. I photograph weddings, families, portraits, and corporate commissions across Royston and the wider south Cambridgeshire and north Hertfordshire area, working with the exceptional chalk downland light and the area's distinctive combination of historic landscape and unspoilt village character.
Wimpole Estate — the National Trust's 18th-century designed landscape by Capability Brown — is the defining photographic destination within reach of Royston. At almost 3,500 acres of parkland, formal garden, walled kitchen garden, and complete working farm complex with stable block, Wimpole provides a range of portrait and wedding settings that few English estates can match. The long evening light across the parkland in summer and the autumn colours of Brown's tree avenues are particularly notable for wedding portrait sequences.
Therfield Heath above the town — 152 acres of unimproved ancient chalk downland with Bronze Age burial mounds, rare chalk-land orchids in summer, and views across four counties on clear days — provides portrait settings of genuine antiquity and natural beauty within walking distance of the town centre. Evening sessions on the heath in late spring catch the chalk-land flowers at their best and the light at its warmest.

Common Questions
Wimpole Estate is the outstanding choice for weddings and formal portrait sessions — the Capability Brown landscape park, the stable block forecourt, and the walled kitchen garden have a variety and scale that serve both large celebrations and intimate couple sessions. For documentary family sessions, Therfield Heath provides an open chalk downland environment with long views and natural flower-rich grass for authentic, relaxed photography.
Yes — Wimpole Estate is one of the most frequently requested locations near Royston. The National Trust estate is available for private photography hire and licensed for wedding ceremonies and receptions. The combination of the Baroque mansion, Brown's landscape, the Gothic Tower, and the working farm creates a uniquely varied wedding day setting.
Royston is approximately 14 miles south-west of Cambridge — my base. I cover Royston and the surrounding south Cambridgeshire and north Hertfordshire area as part of my standard coverage with no additional travel charge for most bookings. Venues across Hertfordshire and into north London are also covered with a standard mileage rate.
Late June and July when the chalk-land orchids and wild flowers are in bloom is exceptional. The golden hour light on the south-facing chalk slopes in September and October is also outstanding. Winter sessions on the heath in frost give a completely different, quieter quality that suits editorial portrait photography particularly well.
