Natural family portraits in Exeter — the Cathedral Close, Northernhay, the Exe riverside, and the East Devon countryside beyond.
Exeter Family Photography
Exeter is one of England's oldest cities — the medieval Cathedral Close, the Norman castle remains in Rougemont Gardens, and the ancient city walls create a portrait backdrop of genuine historical depth that is freely accessible and beautifully maintained. The East Devon countryside and the Dartmoor edge begin within five miles of the city centre, making Exeter a natural base for family photography that spans both urban architecture and open countryside.
Sessions are relaxed and led by your family — the Cathedral grounds, the riverside path, or the open heathland of Woodbury Common according to what suits your family best.

Locations
Exeter Cathedral & Cathedral Close
The medieval Cathedral in its green Close — one of the most complete examples of Gothic cathedral architecture in England, surrounded by lawn and Georgian and medieval buildings. The south façade catches afternoon light from 1pm through golden hour.
Northernhay & Rougemont Gardens
The ancient public gardens above the city — Northernhay, one of the oldest public parks in England, and Rougemont with its Norman castle remains. Beautiful mature trees, walled garden sections, and the old city walls as backdrop.
Exe Riverside & Quay
The medieval Exeter Quay and the Exe valley riverside paths — the old warehouse quayside, the river, the canal basin, and the wide riverside meadows above the city. Excellent for families wanting water, open space, and genuine city character.
East Devon AONB (Woodbury Common)
The East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty begins barely five miles from Exeter city centre — Woodbury Common, the Pebblebed Heaths, and the coastal commons provide open heathland settings with views to the coast and the Exe estuary.
Dartmoor Edge (30 minutes)
The northern Dartmoor moor edge is thirty minutes from Exeter — Drewsteignton, Fingle Bridge, the Teign gorge, and the southern Dartmoor villages provide a completely different family portrait setting when the family wants something wilder and more open.
Killerton Estate (NT)
The National Trust house and estate on Exeter's northern edge — extensive ancient woodlands, formal gardens, an arboretum of exceptional quality, and open parkland. Extraordinary for autumn family photography when the estate turns full copper and gold.
Exeter mixes ancient architecture with accessible countryside
The Cathedral Close, the Norman castle remains, and Northernhay's medieval city walls sit five miles from open East Devon heathland. Family photography in Exeter can span from medieval townscape to open AONB countryside within the same afternoon.
Killerton is exceptional for autumn family sessions
The National Trust Killerton arboretum in October and November provides some of the finest autumn family photography conditions in the South West — the range of specimen trees in full colour across open parkland is extraordinary.
The Cathedral quarter is genuinely beautiful
Exeter Cathedral Close is among the best-preserved medieval ecclesiastical precincts in England — green, architectural, and providing a portrait setting of consistent quality in all directions and at all hours.
Child-led, relaxed, and genuine
Sessions follow your family's energy and pace — exploring the Cathedral Close, running along the riverside path, climbing the Northernhay walls. These natural moments are what family photographs should capture.
The Cathedral Close grounds are public space — freely accessible. The Cathedral interior requires an entry or donation. External portraits in the Close and grounds are entirely unrestricted.
Yes — Killerton is a NT property and standard admission applies (free for NT members). The estate is excellent value for family portrait sessions, particularly in autumn.
Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, and the East Devon AONB coast are 20–30 minutes from Exeter — excellent for Extended Sessions combining the city and the coast, or for standard sessions focused entirely on the beach. Get in touch for coastal session planning.
May for blossom and fresh green in Northernhay and Killerton. July–August evenings for Cathedral golden hour. October at Killerton for the arboretum in full autumn colour — this is genuinely exceptional. December for the Cathedral lit for Christmas.
Approximately 240 miles — within my regular Devon and South West coverage. A travel supplement applies for distances over 60 miles; this is included in your personalised quote.
