Winchester is one of England's ancient capitals — a city of Norman cathedral, medieval streets, and perhaps the most beautiful chalk river landscape in the country. The Itchen Valley runs through the city's heart, with clear chalk streams and water meadows behind the cathedral that John Keats described as the most luminous landscape in England. Above the city, St Catherine's Hill rises to an Iron Age hillfort with chalk downland wildflower grassland and wide views across the Test and Itchen valleys.
Maternity sessions in Winchester take advantage of this extraordinary setting — whether that's the intimate beauty of the Water Meadows, the wide-sky chalk downland of Twyford Down and the South Downs, or the majestic Test Valley estate gardens at Mottisfont. The light here is genuinely special: chalk-reflected, river-softened, and full of the quality that makes Hampshire favoured by artists and photographers alike.

28 to 34 weeks is ideal. Winchester's chalk downland settings are particularly beautiful in late spring when the downland grasses and wildflowers are at their peak — St Catherine's Hill in June, with the chalk being covered in plants, is extraordinary. Late summer golden hour gives long warm light across the Water Meadows and Test Valley. Autumn woodland in Farley Mount is equally appealing.
The Cathedral Close and Water Meadows behind the cathedral are public spaces — freely walkable and one of the most photographically striking settings in England, with the Norman cathedral walls reflected in the chalk streams and Keats's favourite view of the water meadows stretching south. These form part of many Winchester maternity sessions.
I cover Winchester and the wider Hampshire area: Chandler's Ford, Eastleigh, Romsey, Andover, Basingstoke, Farnham, and the Test Valley villages. I also cover Southampton (including the New Forest fringe) and the South Downs National Park south of the city. Travel within 25 miles of Winchester is included.
Late spring and early summer are the finest — the chalk grassland is at its most biologically rich with orchids and wildflowers on Twyford Down and St Catherine's Hill. Late summer has the longest golden hours. November through January gives extraordinary clear, low light on the chalk ridges. All seasons have their character.
