Natural wedding, family and portrait photography on Mersea Island — outdoor sessions at the oyster waterfront, on West Mersea beach and across Essex's most characterful coastal island.
Book a SessionMersea Island is the most south-easterly inhabited island in England — five miles west of Colchester at the confluence of the Blackwater and Colne estuaries, connected to the mainland only by the tidal Strood causeway. It is best known nationally for its oysters (prized since Roman times and still sent to fine dining restaurants across the country) but it is also an island of exceptional photographic beauty: the working waterfront character of West Mersea, the wild estuarine landscape of Cudmore Grove Country Park and the extraordinary light quality of the flat Essex coast combine to create a remarkably atmospheric portrait setting.
The island has a timeless, insular quality — not many miles from Colchester and an hour from London, yet feeling genuinely remote and distinctive, particularly in winter or early morning when the tide cuts off the causeway and the sea mist rolls in from the estuary. I photograph families, couples, weddings and elopements on Mersea Island and across the Essex coast — Colchester, Wivenhoe, the Blackwater villages and the broader East Anglia area. I travel across eastern England for weddings and portrait sessions throughout the year.
Documentary wedding coverage for Mersea Island and the Essex coast — beach ceremonies at West Mersea, outdoor weddings at Mersea Island Vineyard and the beautiful converted barns and country houses of the broader Colchester and Essex coast area.
Natural outdoor family sessions on West Mersea beach and the Blackwater shoreline, in Cudmore Grove Country Park at the island's eastern tip and along the characterful narrow lanes and field paths of this quiet island.
Engagement sessions on the West Mersea waterfront (with the oyster sheds and working boats), at the golden-hour beach, in Cudmore Grove Country Park and on the island causeway — the tidal road connection to the mainland creates a uniquely dramatic setting.
Intimate elopement photography on Mersea Island — sunrise and golden-hour beach ceremonies, tidal causeway portraits and secluded estuary settings that feel far removed from the mainland despite being an hour from London.
Individual portrait sessions on the beach, along the working waterfront with its oyster company wharfs and hard, in the meadows and grazing marshes of the island's interior and in the reed beds and estuarine habitats of Cudmore Grove.
In-home lifestyle newborn sessions in West Mersea, East Mersea, Colchester, Wivenhoe and the surrounding north Essex area.
The principal beach and working waterfront of the island — the West Mersea waterfront with the famous oyster sheds (the Colchester Native oyster, prized since Roman times), the fishing boats, beach huts and the wide sandy beach stretching east create a unique mix of working coastal character and seaside portrait settings.
The tidal road connecting Mersea Island to the Essex mainland — the Strood floods at high tide, stranding the island (sometimes several times a day). The causeway, the sea walls flanking it and the sweeping estuary views on both sides create arresting and unusual portrait settings.
Essex Wildlife Trust and Country Park at the eastern tip of the island — grassy clifftops above the beach (site of Pleistocene fossils including mammoth and hippo), the shingle and sandy beaches facing the open Mersea Flats, and extensive mixed wildlife habitats.
The broad Blackwater Estuary stretching north and east of the island — one of the most important estuarine habitats in England (SSSI, RAMSAR, SPA), with the distinctive Essex watery landscape of sea walls, salt marsh, grazing marsh and skyscape views.
The quiet eastern part of the island around East Mersea (the older village) — the ancient Mersea Barrow (Iron Age burial mound visible by the road) and the lane network leading through meadows to the island's eastern shore and creeks.
