Weddings / Reception
The speeches, the first dance, the candid guest moments, the evening celebration — the half of the wedding that most people forget to plan photography for.
Approach
Couples spend months planning the ceremony, but the reception is often where the most emotional, memorable, and unrepeatable moments occur. The grandfather watching his granddaughter dance. The best man's speech sending the room into tears. The couple sneaking away for ten minutes of quiet.
Reception photography demands a different skill set from ceremony work — anticipation, quick movement, and the ability to work in changing light conditions from bright afternoon to dark dancefloor within the same evening.
Drinks reception
The relaxed transition between ceremony and wedding breakfast. Guests mingling, candid laughter, and beautiful candid portraits in natural afternoon light.
Wedding breakfast
The room before guests enter, the table details, the first course — and the faces watching the speeches with tears and laughter.
Speeches
The best man, the father of the bride, the couple — I photograph both the speaker and the reactions simultaneously, and will never miss the tearful faces in the crowd.
Cake cutting
A clean, well-lit moment. I position for the best angle relative to the ambient light, so the cake and both faces are sharp.
First dance
Shot wide for context and close for emotion. The first dance benefits enormously from a long lens — pure, unposed intimacy.
Evening celebration
Dancing, candid moments, guests on the dancefloor, the couple enjoying the evening. High-energy, documentary, and real.
Golden hour
Almost every reception includes a window, usually 20–30 minutes in the early evening, where the light turns golden and soft. This is the best time for couple portraits — away from the crowd, beautifully lit, and completely unpressured. I always plan this window into the day with the couple in advance.
Do you stay for the full evening reception?
Coverage duration is agreed in advance and depends on the package. Full-day packages typically run until 10–11pm. If you want coverage earlier or later, this can be arranged — see the pricing page for details.
Can you handle low-light evening photography?
Yes — I use professional full-frame cameras with high-ISO capability and external flash for evening dancefloor coverage. The result is natural-looking, well-exposed images even in dark conditions.
Will you photograph the guests?
Absolutely. Guest candids are some of the most treasured images. I move through the room throughout the reception, capturing conversations, laughter, grandparents watching speeches, children dancing — the human story around the couple.
What about the table details and decorations?
Yes — flowers, place settings, the cake table, stationery, favours. These are documented during setup and during the reception while guests are seated.
Can I have a second photographer for the reception?
A second photographer is recommended for guest lists over 100 or for venues with multiple spaces running simultaneously. They capture the room while I focus on the couple — ensuring nothing is missed.
