Golden college grounds, amber riverside walks, the warm seasonal light of October and November. Cambridge in autumn is extraordinary.
Enquire About Your DateCambridge in October and November is one of the most visually spectacular places to photograph in England. The lime trees along The Backs turn brilliant gold. Virginia creeper blazes crimson against pale stone walls. The mature oaks around Grantchester reflect amber-gold in the still River Cam. The low autumn sun cuts diagonally through college archways at five o'clock, casting long warm shadows across courtyard stone.
I have been photographing weddings in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire for years, and autumn is the season I find most visually compelling. The wedding venues that look beautiful in any season — Madingley Hall, Anstey Hall, King's College, the college grounds and gardens — are transformed in autumn. The foliage adds a richness and warmth that no other season provides, and the lower light throughout the day means shadows are longer, tones warmer, and the atmosphere more romantic from morning through to the evening reception.
My documentary approach means I am watching and capturing throughout the day — the getting ready, the ceremony, the quiet conversations between guests, the couple portraits in autumn light. No staging, no performance. Just the genuine warmth and beauty of an October or November wedding in Cambridge.
The city and surrounding countryside offer exceptional seasonal settings through October and November.
The avenue of lime trees along The Backs turns brilliant gold in October and November. Combined with the pale stone of King's Chapel, the autumn light creates extraordinary portrait opportunities that are unique to this time of year.
The walk from Cambridge to Grantchester along the River Cam passes through flood meadows that turn amber and russet in autumn. The willows along the riverbank are magnificent in October light, particularly in the late afternoon.
The Botanic Garden is one of Cambridge's best-kept autumn secrets — plane trees, maples, and ginkgos create a palette of gold, amber, orange, and deep crimson through October and November. Perfect for couple portraits.
The grounds of Madingley Hall — one of Cambridge's finest wedding venues — are exceptional in autumn. The formal gardens give way to informal woodland with mature oaks and chestnuts in full seasonal colour.
The chalk grasslands and mixed woodlands east and south of Cambridge offer abundant autumn colour in a more rural setting — ideal for couples who want an English countryside aesthetic rather than a historic university backdrop.
Many Cambridge college courts — particularly those with old plane trees and climbing Virginia creeper — are spectacular in autumn. The deep crimson of Virginia creeper against pale stone is one of the most distinctive autumn visuals in Cambridge.

Cambridge's autumn colour typically peaks between mid-October and early November, depending on the year. The lime trees along The Backs, the maples in the Botanic Garden, and the oaks in the college grounds all colour at slightly different times, which means the window for outstanding autumn photography extends across several weeks.
For autumn colour, King's College and The Backs, the Cambridge Botanic Garden, Madingley Hall, and Anstey Hall all offer exceptional seasonal settings. I have photographed weddings at all of these in autumn and know the specific locations and times of day that work best for each.
Autumn light in Cambridge — particularly from October onwards — is low, warm, and often golden rather than harsh. This is actually excellent light for wedding photography. I work with available light throughout the day and plan the couple portrait session for the late afternoon golden hour, which in October falls around 4-5pm and is particularly beautiful on Cambridge's sandstone buildings.
Absolutely. The grove of lime trees along The Backs in October is one of my favourite portrait settings anywhere in the UK. Access depends on your booking and whether a college supervises the area — I can advise on the practicalities for your specific wedding date and venue.
Yes — I cover all of Cambridgeshire, including weddings in Ely, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Bury St Edmunds, and the surrounding countryside. Many rural Cambridgeshire venues have beautiful farmland and woodland that is at its best in autumn.
