Children at parties are one of the most rewarding subjects in photography. They are entirely unselfconscious, fully absorbed in the activity in front of them, and entirely uninterested in whether someone is pointing a camera in their direction. The expressions, the chaos, the delight, the inevitable tears, the sugar-induced exuberance — all of it is genuine, all of it is fleeting, and almost none of it will be captured on parents' phones because parents are too busy managing the day.
Children require a different approach than adult photography. Trying to pose them formally — standing straight, smiling at the camera — rarely produces the images parents actually want to display. The best children's party photographs are almost always action photographs: the moment before blowing out candles, the face of pure concentration during pass-the-parcel, the full-bodied laugh at something only a seven-year-old finds hilarious.
This requires a photographer who is comfortable at a child's eye level both literally and figuratively — crouching down, moving quickly, keeping a low profile, and anticipating moments rather than waiting for them to be set up.
A two-hour children's party has a fairly consistent rhythm: arrivals and initial activities, the main entertainment (magician, games, soft play), food and the cake, and a wind-down period. The energy peak is usually during the main entertainment and at the cake moment. The most emotionally expressive photographs — including genuine individual portraits of each child that parents will love — often happen in the first thirty minutes while children are still excited and haven't yet reached overstimulation.
Consider having a photographer for the first ninety minutes rather than the full duration. This typically captures all the key set pieces and the period of highest energy without requiring coverage of the tidying up and tearful departures at the end.
Amid the group chaos, ensure your photographer knows who the birthday child is and the significant moments planned specifically for them — opening gifts, wearing the birthday badge, the moment they see the cake. These are the photographs that will be printed and shared most widely. Don't let them happen without a dedicated photographer in position.
For parties where children other than your own will be photographed, brief communication with attending parents — that a professional photographer will be present and images are for family use — is courteous and avoids any uncomfortable questions later. Most parents welcome it. The practical approach is to include a note on the invitation or send a quick message at the time of inviting.
