Christmas is the moment families most want to be photographed together — but the festive period is also the most chaotic. Children are over-excited, schedules are packed, and everyone is simultaneously exhausted and trying to appear delighted. Here is how to get portraits that actually look like the start of something beautiful rather than the end of a long day.
The ideal window for Christmas family photography in England is mid-October through to the end of November. This sounds early, but it gives you several advantages: autumn light is still warm and generous, trees may still hold golden leaves, and the session can be used for Christmas card photographs with plenty of time for printing and sending.
Booking in December itself is possible, but sessions are heavily competed for, the weather is less reliable, and the light window — already narrow — shrinks further. Photographers in the UK typically fill their December slots by October, especially for outdoor sessions around popular locations.
Outdoor Christmas sessions work beautifully in the right conditions — bare trees against a pale sky, frost underfoot, breath visible in cold air. The light in late autumn and early winter is low and directional, creating the kind of warmth that softens faces and makes layered winter clothing look intentional rather than practical.
Indoor sessions offer a different experience: warmth, fairy lights, the intimacy of a home environment. Kitchen table light, a decorated tree in the background, children on sofas in pyjamas — these sessions often produce the most emotionally resonant images because they look exactly like the family's life rather than an idealised version of it.
The classic mistake is dressing everyone in matching Christmas jumpers. They read as costumes rather than clothing, and the photographs date immediately. What works better is a coordinated palette — deep greens, burgundies, cream, navy — that reads as intentional but stops short of uniform.
Layers photograph particularly well in winter: a chunky knit over a collared shirt, a scarf that adds colour, a coat worn open. Avoid bright reds and dense patterns unless the entire family is wearing them at the same tonal weight, as they will dominate the composition.
For children, comfort is more important than formality. A child who is cold, uncomfortable or repeatedly told not to get muddy will not cooperate. Dress them warmly and accept that perfection in children's portraits is less interesting than aliveness.
Christmas family sessions with children work best around nap schedules and meals. A mid-morning session after breakfast and before lunch typically gets the most cooperative behaviour from under-fives. Have snacks available. Bring a favourite toy or book as a comfort item rather than a distraction prop.
Be honest with older children about what the session involves and why it matters. Children who understand that the photographs will be kept for decades tend to take them more seriously than children who have simply been told to smile. Giving them something specific to look forward to afterwards also helps.
Christmas family photographs have a longer useful life than most people plan for. Beyond the obvious Christmas card, they tend to become the preferred portrait for that year across all uses — social media profile updates, framed prints, grandparent gifts, and the family album entry for the year.
For printed Christmas cards, plan for a minimum of three to four weeks between gallery delivery and the date you want cards in the post. This allows time for selection, ordering, printing and addressing. This is another reason why October sessions serve Christmas purposes better than December sessions.
