A baby's first year contains more physical transformation than any other period of human life. From the tightly curled, sleeping newborn to the standing, grinning, almost-walking one-year-old — the difference is barely recognisable as the same person. Milestone photography captures this extraordinary progression at its key stages, creating a visual record that becomes more valuable with every year that passes. This guide covers the ideal ages for milestone sessions, what to expect at each stage, and how to get the most from this first-year journey.
Milestone sessions are portrait sessions timed to coincide with specific developmental stages in a baby's first year. Rather than a single newborn shoot and then nothing until a first birthday cake smash, milestone photography captures the moments in between — when babies learn to hold their heads, sit unsupported, crawl, pull to standing, and develop the unique personality that defines their first year.
Most milestone photographers offer a first-year package that includes three or four sessions: newborn (5–14 days), sitter (6–8 months), and first birthday (11–13 months). Some packages include an additional session at 3–4 months. The consistency of using the same photographer, similar settings, and a cohesive editing style across all sessions creates a collection that tells a unified story from the very beginning.
The newborn stage is the most time-sensitive of all milestone sessions. Babies in the first two weeks sleep deeply, curl naturally, and retain the compact, fetal quality that defines classic newborn photography. After three weeks, babies become more alert, less curled, and harder to settle into the extended sleep that newborn posing requires.
At this stage, photographs capture the tiniest details — wrinkled fingers gripping a parent's thumb, the downy hair on the back of the neck, the impossibly small eyelashes, the particular way a newborn's lips purse during sleep. These details change within weeks and are impossible to recreate later.
At three months, babies are beginning to engage with the world — tracking faces, smiling socially, and developing the first hints of personality. They can hold their heads up briefly during tummy time, and their eyes focus clearly on the camera. This session captures the transition from purely reflexive newborn behaviour to deliberate social interaction.
Three-month sessions tend to be shorter (30–45 minutes) and work best as relaxed lifestyle sessions at home. The baby is typically photographed on a soft blanket or in a parent's arms. The social smile — that first wide, gummy grin directed at a familiar face — is the defining image of this stage.
The sitter session is many families' favourite milestone session. At six to eight months, babies can sit independently (or nearly so), are extremely expressive, and respond enthusiastically to sounds, toys, and attention. Their personalities are unmistakable. The range of expressions captured in a sitter session — delight, concentration, surprise, the particular open-mouthed laugh of a baby discovering something new — is extraordinary.
This is also the ideal stage for introducing more creative elements: simple props, seasonal setups, and outdoor portraits (weather permitting). Babies at this age are stable enough to sit in grass, on a blanket in a park, or on a low surface with support nearby. They are not yet mobile enough to crawl away mid-frame, which makes posing significantly easier than it will be three months later.
The first birthday session marks the completion of the milestone journey. At twelve months, babies are typically pulling to stand, cruising along furniture, and some are taking their first independent steps. They are fully interactive, opinionated, and blazingly individual. This session captures who they have become over the course of a year.
The cake smash has become an iconic first-birthday tradition — a small decorated cake placed in front of the child for them to explore, taste, and gleefully demolish. The resulting photographs are joyful, messy, and entirely authentic. Most cake smash sessions include a "clean" portrait portion before the cake is introduced, giving you elegant milestone portraits alongside the celebratory chaos.
💡 Tip: Book the entire first-year package during pregnancy — ideally by 32 weeks. This ensures availability for the time-critical newborn session and locks in pricing. Most photographers offer significant savings on first-year packages compared to individual sessions.
The practical preparation for milestone sessions is straightforward but important:
The power of milestone photography multiplies when the images are displayed together. A sequence of three or four framed prints — the same child at newborn, six months, and twelve months — creates a triptych that documents an extraordinary year of growth. Uniform framing, consistent editing, and matching print sizes make the progression visually cohesive and deeply moving.
Many photographers offer milestone albums — purpose-printed books containing every image from all sessions in chronological order. These albums become one of the most treasured objects a family can own: the complete visual story of their child's first year, captured intentionally and beautifully across four pivotal moments.
