Easter is one of the first real opportunities of the year for outdoor family photography in England — the light has returned after winter, the first flowers are appearing, and school holidays create a natural break in the family routine. Getting the timing right makes the difference between a cold, muddy session and something genuinely beautiful.
Easter falls between late March and late April depending on the year. In terms of photography conditions, later Easter dates (mid-to-late April) consistently produce better results than early ones (late March). By mid-April, the difference in light, temperature and available greenery is noticeable.
Daffodils — which are associated with Easter — peak in late February and March and are often finishing by the time Easter arrives. Cherry blossoms, which are far more photogenic, peak in April and overlap with Easter in most years. Bluebells may be just emerging by late April in warmer years.
The most enduring Easter family photographs avoid overt Easter props in favour of seasonal naturalness — children running through a park, family walks, spring flowers explored at ground level. The props and decorations that loom large on the day tend to date the images; the genuine family interaction does not.
That said, a genuinely enjoyable Easter egg hunt or activity — photographed naturally rather than staged — produces wonderful images. If your family has an Easter tradition, having the photographer present for it creates authentic documentary photographs rather than posed portraits.
Spring pastels work well at Easter because they complement the season's colour palette without fighting it. Soft yellows, mint greens, pale blues and cream all look natural against spring greenery. The key is coherence across the family — coordinate tones rather than matching exactly.
Dress in practical layers. April mornings in England can be cold, and the temperature drops quickly if cloud arrives. A light jacket or cardigan worn open is both practical and photogenic.
Easter photography is popular because October half-term has already passed and spring feels long-awaited after winter. Photographers fill Easter slots early — book in February for an April session. If cherry blossom or bluebell conditions are important to you, build in flexibility on the exact date, as these windows can shift by up to two weeks depending on weather patterns.
