Cambridge graduation is unlike any other graduation in England. The formal academic dress, ancient college ceremony, and extraordinary architecture combine to create photographs you'll treasure for decades. But graduation day is also busy, time-constrained, and logistically complicated. This guide explains how to make the most of the day — whether you're the graduate or the family.
Cambridge has two main graduation seasons:
Senate House Passage & Senate House
The formal graduation ceremony location — couples and families photograph on the steps and in the passage. Busiest 11am–3pm on degree day.
King's College, Great Court
The most iconic Cambridge exterior — queues for photos here are long on graduation day. Arrive early or return during a quieter moment in late afternoon.
The Backs
Riverside views behind the colleges — beautiful for relaxed portraits with the college architecture across the river.
Your own college grounds
Most colleges allow graduates and family to photograph in the main court and gardens on graduation day. Your porter's lodge can confirm specific rules.
Bridge of Sighs (St John's)
The famous covered bridge — most beautiful for photography in the morning light. Note: you typically need to be inside a St John's punt or boat for the underside view.
Cambridge graduation days are logistically pressured — ceremonies run back-to-back, families have a limited window before or after the ceremony, and the most iconic locations get very crowded. A professional photographer has key advantages:
Pre-ceremony (8:30–10:30am)
Ideal time for relaxed portraits in college — before the crowds arrive and while gowns are still pristine. Robing rooms are busy; arrive with 45 minutes to spare.
Post-ceremony (12:30–3pm)
The traditional drinks reception and family gathering. Good for candid moments, group shots, and the iconic Backs portraits. Busy but joyful.
Late afternoon (4:30–7pm)
Often the best light of the day. Crowds thin, family groups are more relaxed, and the golden afternoon light over the colleges is spectacular. This is when I prefer to do the formal portrait session.
