A full Nigerian wedding in the UK typically includes two distinct celebrations: the Traditional Wedding (Igba Nkwu for Igbo families, Eru Iyawo for Yoruba, or equivalent traditions for other Nigerian groups) and the White Wedding — the church or civil ceremony with Western dress. Many British-Nigerian couples hold both events on the same weekend, creating one of the richest and most visually spectacular celebrations in the UK wedding calendar.
The Traditional Wedding is held first — usually on Friday evening or Saturday. The bride, groom, and their families wear matching aso-oke fabric outfits (gele head wrapping for women, agbada or guinea brocade for men). The colours and coordination of family groups in matching fabric create extraordinary visual impact.
The key ceremony element — for Igbo families — is the Ime ego (bride price) presentation, followed by the bride kneeling to serve palm wine to the groom, then carrying the cup through the crowd to find him among the guests. The moment she finds him and he drinks the wine is one of the most emotional and joyful moments in any Nigerian wedding.
For Yoruba families, the Eru Iyawo (wife's dowry) presentation and the family prostrations and greetings are central elements. Both traditions involve gift-giving, prayers, and large family gatherings.
The church or registry ceremony follows on Saturday or Sunday. Nigerian church services are longer and more expressive than most Western ceremonies, often involving gospel music, prayer, and testimonies. The energy of the congregation, the choir, and the family responses during the service creates powerful documentary material.
Nigerian brides at White Weddings typically wear elaborate Western gowns, often with rhinestone embellishments, cathedral trains, and statement veils. The groom and groomsmen wear coordinated formal suits or traditional dress.
Nigerian wedding receptions are famous for their energy. The money spraying tradition — where guests come onto the dance floor to spray naira (or pounds) on the couple while they dance — is one of the most visually compelling moments of any Nigerian reception. Use a fast shutter speed and don't be afraid of the chaos.
Live highlife music or an Afrobeats DJ fill the room with sound, and the extended family joins the dance floor in waves throughout the evening. Cover the couple's formal entry (often announced and choreographed), the first dance, the cutting of the multi-tier cake, and the family group photographs.
Nigerian families are warm and celebratory — they want the photographs to reflect the scale and joy of the event. Have a list of required family group combinations and establish it with the bride and groom well in advance. Two photographers are highly recommended for multi-event Nigerian weekends.
