The Norfolk Broads is a landscape quite unlike anything else in England — flat, vast, and possessed of a particular quality of light that has attracted painters and photographers since the Norwich School made East Anglia an artistic movement in the 18th century. Here is how to photograph it, and where specifically to go.
The Broads sit at a latitude and orientation that produces extraordinary morning and evening light over open water. The flat horizon means sunrise light travels unobstructed for miles. The reeds and open sky create a reflective environment that bounces light around the landscape in ways that highland terrain cannot. The blue-grey of the Broads water at dawn, against the ochre of winter reeds, is one of the most distinctive landscape colours in England.
Hickling Broad is the largest of the Norfolk Broads and one of the most remote. The Weaver's Way runs along its northern edge, offering accessible walking with extraordinary wide-sky views. The Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve at Hickling is one of the finest wetland environments in Britain for combined landscape and wildlife photography. Best at sunrise in summer, facing east across the main broad.
The National Trust windpump at Horsey is among the most photographed sites in Norfolk — its reflection in Horsey Mere at dawn is one of the classic Norfolk compositions. The mere itself is large enough to produce significant reflections. The surrounding dyke network offers outstanding portrait and engagement photography backdrops — wooden bridges over reeds, open sky, and complete quiet.
Barton Broad has been cleared of algae over the past decade and now has water of extraordinary clarity. The restored broad sits amid ancient alder woodland coppice — an unusual combination of open water and ancient tree cover. The boardwalk through the alder carr at Barton is one of the most atmospheric woodland photography locations in East Anglia.
The stretch of the Thurne between Potter Heigham and Thurne Mouth is lined with traditional drainage windmills — the most concentrated group in England. At golden hour from the Thurne opposite bank, with the windmills silhouetted and reflected, the view is extraordinary. The medieval bridge at Potter Heigham is one of Norfolk's most distinctive architectural features.
The Broads landscape is almost entirely flat — distances feel longer than they are because there are no landmarks to orient by. Bring a detailed OS map or a GPS-enabled app. Many of the best locations require a short walk from car parks — wear waterproof footwear in all seasons. The Broads is a National Park — no off-road vehicle access. Mobile signal is patchy across much of the area.
