Not every photographer who works with families and portraits is comfortable or experienced working with animals. Dogs especially — which constitute the vast majority of pet portrait bookings — require a specific approach: patience, an understanding of animal behaviour, the ability to work at ground level, and an acceptance that sessions are partly outside the photographer's control.
Before booking any photographer for pet portraits in Cambridge, ask specifically about their experience with animals. Look at their portfolio for examples of genuine pet photography rather than incidental pet-in-a-family-shoot images. A photographer who has worked with pets regularly will approach the session differently from one for whom it's an add-on.
Coe Fen and Sheep's Green. This stretch of common land along the Cam south of the city centre offers meadows, willows, and the river — classic English pastoral scenery that provides beautiful backgrounds for dog portraits. The space is large enough for an off-lead dog to run freely while still being photographable from a reasonable distance.
Midsummer Common. Adjacent to the river in central Cambridge, Midsummer Common provides open grassland with the city skyline and riverside as backdrop. Early morning sessions here, when the common is largely empty, allow relaxed off-lead photography without the distraction of passing dogs.
Wandlebury Country Park. For a more woodland and landscape feel, Wandlebury on the southern edge of Cambridge offers chalk downland, beech woodland, and open fields. The variety of environments within a single session makes it worth the short drive from the city centre.
Milton Country Park. With lakes, woodland, and open grassland, Milton Country Park north of Cambridge suits dogs who swim and families who want a varied session location.
Arrive with a moderately exercised dog — not too tired to engage, not so full of energy that focus is impossible. Bring a bag of high-value treats your dog doesn't receive normally (small pieces of cheese or cooked chicken tend to work better than standard training treats). Bring their favourite toy. Bring a spare lead and collar in case one gets muddy or wet.
Most dog portrait sessions run between 45 minutes and 90 minutes. Shorter for older, calmer dogs who tire more easily; longer for puppies with boundless energy. The best photographs are usually taken in the first 30–40 minutes before a dog becomes overstimulated or bored.
