Poland has one of the richest wedding traditions in Europe, and the substantial Polish community in the UK has brought those traditions — adapted, evolved, and blended with British culture — into celebrations that are uniquely their own. Polish weddings tend to be long (often two days), loud, and enormously generous in their hospitality.
The key traditional elements — the bread and salt welcome, the Oczepiny ceremony, the midnight rituals — vary by region and by how traditional the family is. Having a conversation with the couple before the day will tell you which customs they are honouring and how to position yourself for each one.
One of the most photogenic moments of a Polish wedding is the powitanie chlebem i solą — the bread and salt welcome. The couple are greeted by their parents (usually the groom's parents) with a decorated loaf of bread and salt upon their arrival at the reception venue. The couple must eat a piece of bread sprinkled with salt — the bread represents prosperity, and the salt represents the hardships they will face together.
This moment is brief but visually rich. Position yourself to capture the parents' presentation, the couple's reactions, and the family gathered around.
The Oczepiny is the traditional removing of the bride's veil or crown — symbolising the transition from maidenhood to married life. In traditional Polish weddings, the veil is replaced with a cap or kerchief. In modern British-Polish weddings, it may be purely symbolic. It is usually accompanied by music and is a significant emotional moment for the bride and her family.
Polish weddings traditionally include a midnight meal — a warm soup (barszcz or żurek) served to guests who have been dancing for hours. This is a practical and charming tradition that marks a natural pause in the evening's festivities. The communal gathering around steaming bowls of soup at midnight provides wonderful documentary images.
The toast tradition at Polish weddings is vigorous. "Sto lat" (a hundred years) is the classic toast, usually accompanied by a rousing chorus. Capture the reactions of the room during the major toasts.
Traditional Polish weddings include a second-day celebration — the poprawiny — usually at the family home or the same venue, more informal, with leftovers from the previous day and continuation of the celebration. If you're contracted to cover both days, the poprawiny often provides more relaxed, authentic family moments than the main wedding day.
Polish wedding receptions are long and dance-heavy. Live bands playing Polish folk music alongside contemporary pop are common. The dance floor fills quickly and stays full. Cover the early formal dances — the first dance, the parent dances — and then move into documentary mode for the evening.
