Prom is the most dressed-up most young people will have been in their lives to this point — and it passes quickly. Professional prom photography preserves not just the occasion but the person: their style, their character, and who they were at this particular moment in growing up. Here is everything parents and young people need to know about planning great prom photography.
There are three points in a prom evening where professional photography typically makes sense: before the event (at home or a pre-arranged location), at the prom venue during the arrival, or a separate portrait session in the days before or after prom while the outfit is available.
Pre-prom sessions — before the event itself — are often the most successful photographically. Everyone is fresh, the light is better than inside a venue, and there is no time pressure. A session at a beautiful outdoor location with a group of friends produces images that feel like a genuine event rather than a rushed corner of the venue car park.
A pre-prom portrait session typically runs 1–2 hours in the early evening on prom day. Groups of friends — anywhere from two people to larger groups — meet at a pre-arranged outdoor location for individual portraits with parents and family, couple portraits if applicable, and group shots.
Timing matters. Aim to schedule the session so there is at least 30–45 minutes before everyone needs to leave for the event itself. Rushed sessions produce rushed results. Allow more time than you think you need, especially with larger groups.
Ideal locations for pre-prom sessions are outdoor settings with visual interest and enough space for groups: formal garden settings, historic architecture, riverside locations, or large park spaces. In Cambridge, the Botanical Garden, the Backs, and the grounds of the more accessible colleges all work well for pre-prom portraits.
Professional photographers at the venue itself present specific challenges: indoor lighting is often poor, there is typically no control over background or positioning, and the group is already preoccupied with the event beginning. If you want the best photographs from prom, a pre-event session is almost always a significantly better use of photography time than venue coverage.
Some families choose to have a photographer cover both: the pre-prom session and the grand entrance at the venue. This produces the most complete documentation of the evening, but requires coordination with the venue and a longer booking.
If the prom date does not allow time for a proper portrait session, booking a separate session in the weeks after prom — while outfits can still be worn — is a popular alternative. Evening golden hour sessions in early summer produce some of the most beautiful prom portraits, with warm light and unhurried time to capture the look properly.
