Natural family portraits in Gloucester — the Cathedral Close, the Victorian Docks, and the Cotswold and Forest of Dean countryside beyond.
Gloucester Family Photography
Gloucester has one of the finest Norman cathedrals in England, the largest inland docks, and a historic city core that sits between the Cotswold escarpment and the ancient Forest of Dean — the geographical variety available within twenty minutes of the city centre makes it exceptional for family portrait photography with genuine character and depth.
Sessions are entirely relaxed — your family, your pace, and the freedom to explore a city that has been continuously inhabited for two thousand years.

Locations
Gloucester Cathedral & Close
One of the finest Norman and medieval cathedrals in England — the cloistered garth (filmed as Hogwarts), the perpendicular tower, and the Cathedral green. The Close faces south and catches long afternoon light in spring and autumn. The fan-vaulted cloisters are exceptional for interior portrait work.
Gloucester Docks & Regattashire
The largest inland docks in England — Victorian warehouses, canal basin reflections, and the historic working waterfront converted into a distinctive quayside setting. Excellent for families wanting industrial character and open water.
Westgate & Historic Quarter
The medieval street framework of Gloucester — the Westgate, the arched shopping passages of the Cross, and the mix of Tudor timber-framing and Georgian stone that survives in the city centre. A distinctive and historic urban portrait setting.
Robin Hood Hill & Robinswood
The limestone hill park rising above the southern city — open grassland, ancient ridge earthworks, and views across the Severn Vale to the Forest of Dean and Welsh hills beyond. Accessible, dog-friendly, and beautiful throughout the year.
Painswick & the Slad Valley (10 min)
The Cotswold escarpment villages — Painswick and the Slad Valley — begin ten minutes east of Gloucester city centre, providing an entirely different family portrait setting in the AONB countryside for Extended Sessions.
Forest of Dean (25 min)
The ancient Royal Forest west of Gloucester — Beechenhurst, Nagshead, the Cannop Ponds, and the sculpted trails of the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail. Excellent for families wanting woodland, cycling-track paths, and the distinctive character of the oldest managed woodland in England.
Gloucester's Cathedral is extraordinary
Gloucester Cathedral is one of the great Norman buildings of England and contains the finest example of Perpendicular Gothic fan-vaulting anywhere in the world. The Cathedral Close and garth are freely accessible and provide a portrait setting of extraordinary historic depth.
The Cotswolds begin on Gloucester's doorstep
The city sits at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment — Painswick, the Slad Valley, and the open AONB countryside begin literally five miles from the Cathedral. Family portrait sessions can combine Gloucester city with Cotswold countryside in the same afternoon.
The Severn and Forest of Dean
Gloucester is flanked on two sides by distinctive landscape — the broad Severn tidal estuary to the west and the ancient Forest of Dean beyond it. Both provide entirely different natural settings from the Cotswold east, giving Gloucester unusual geographical variety for portrait photography.
Relaxed sessions at the family's pace
Whether exploring the Cathedral cloisters, running along the Docks quayside, or walking Robin Hood Hill, sessions follow your family without posing or direction. Real moments, genuine expressions, the natural energy of your children — these are the photographs worth keeping.
The Cathedral grounds and garth are accessible freely during Cathedral hours. The famous fan-vaulted cloisters are inside the Cathedral and standard admission applies — well worth it for family portraits. The Cathedral courtyard and Close outside are completely free to use.
Yes — the Docks quayside is entirely flat, paved, and free of traffic. The canal basin water is bounded and the area is very walkable for pushchairs and young children. The Victorian warehouses provide excellent shade in summer and wind shelter in autumn.
Yes — Painswick is ten minutes from Gloucester and pairs beautifully for an Extended Session. The combination of the Cathedral / Docks urban setting and the Painswick churchyard / Slad Valley countryside is a genuinely distinctive portrait session.
May for the Cathedral gardens in spring. Late September through October for the Cotswold escarpment autumn colour. Any year-round for the Docks, which photograph well in all weather and all seasons.
Approximately 115 miles — within my regular Gloucestershire and South West coverage. A travel supplement applies for distances over 60 miles from Cambridge.
