Natural family photography in Perth — Kinnoull Hill, North Inch Park, Scone Palace grounds, and the River Tay.
Perth Family Photography
Perth is Scotland's gateway to the Highlands — at the wide point of the Tay where the river broadens before its estuary, with Kinnoull Hill rising to the east and the first Highland hills visible to the north. It is a city with a strong local identity and exceptional green spaces within its boundaries: Kinnoull, the North Inch and South Inch parks, and the Scone Palace grounds just north of the city.
Family portrait sessions in Perth are available throughout the year, with travel to Perth incorporated into my Scottish wedding and portrait schedule. Contact me with your preferred dates to check availability and discuss the best Perth locations for your family's portrait session.
Why Perth
Kinnoull Hill — families with a view
Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park rises directly above Perth's east side — beech and oak woodland on the lower slopes giving way to open rocky viewpoints above the Tay, with the Kinnoull Tower folly and panoramic views west across Perth and north into the Perthshire hills. Family sessions here combine woodland portrait light with spectacular open-sky views that children are genuinely excited by.
North Inch Park — Perth's riverside green
The North Inch is Perth's large riverside park — flat, open, with the Tay along one boundary and the city on the other, mature trees throughout, and a wide horizon sky. It is calm, accessible to families with pushchairs, and gives that classic riverside-city portrait light that is particular to Perth's position on the Tay.
Scone Palace grounds — historic grandeur as backdrop
The grounds of Scone Palace — the parkland, the tree collections, and the riverside walks — give a country house and parkland portrait setting unique to this part of Scotland. The Palace itself is a magnificent backdrop; the grounds a constantly varied portrait environment with the added benefit of Tayside context.
A genuinely Scottish family portrait
Perth is one of Scotland's most characterful cities — at the Highland edge, with the River Tay as its axis and Perthshire's hills visible from the city itself. Family portraits taken in Perth have a specifically Scottish quality that makes them genuinely distinctive from portraits taken in equivalently-sized English cities.

Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park
The wooded hillside rising to 222m above the Tay east bank — the beech and oak woodland on the lower slopes, the rocky summit viewpoints, and the Kinnoull Tower folly give a complete portrait environment combining woodland light with dramatic open views. The autumn colour here is exceptional: the beech woodland turns gold and copper from mid-October.
North Inch Park & Tay riverside
The North Inch — Perth's main riverside park — gives open parkland, mature isolated trees, and the broad Tay frontage. The views west from the Inch towards Kinnoull and the city skyline are excellent for family outdoor portraits in the afternoon and evening light.
Scone Palace grounds
The parkland approach, the tree collections, and the formal grounds of Scone Palace give a historic estate portrait setting. Combined with the adjacent River Tay, the Scone area provides one of the richest portrait landscapes available anywhere in central Perthshire.
Branklyn Garden (National Trust)
Branklyn Garden — a renowned two-acre NTS garden — is famous for its rockery and peat garden with exceptional plant collections. The intimate garden scale and the extraordinary plant variety make it a unique portrait environment for families wanting something genuinely different from an open parkland session.
South Inch & Tay Path corridor
The South Inch and the riverside Tay path south of Perth give a second, quieter riverside portrait corridor — the Tay path towards Moncrieffe Island, the open grassland of the South Inch, and the industrial-historic waterfront character of this part of Perth all contribute to a portrait experience specific to the city.
Yes — Perth is a destination location for me, and family sessions are available on the same trip as wedding commissions in Perthshire. A travel supplement applies; if your session is combined with a Perth or Perthshire wedding commission on the same trip, the supplement is proportionally very modest. Contact me with your preferred dates.
The Kinnoull Hill woodland is finest in April–May (spring leaf) and October (autumn colour). North Inch and the riverside work throughout the year but are at their best in the long June–August evenings when the Tay light is golden. Winter sessions with frost or low light in the Inch or on Kinnoull are beautiful for those open to non-summer timing.
Yes — I cover newborn and baby portrait sessions in client homes as well as outdoor locations. A Perth home newborn session can be combined with an outdoor family session once the baby is old enough (typically 6+ weeks). Contact me for availability on specific Perth dates.
Yes — Dunkeld's Cathedral and the birch woods of the Hermitage are exceptional. Pitlochry, Loch Tummel viewpoint (Queen's View), and Kenmore at Loch Tay are all within an hour of Perth and give wider highland Perthshire landscape options for families wanting more dramatic Scottish scenery.
Contact me with your preferred dates, the number of family members, and any specific Perth or Perthshire locations you'd like. I'll confirm availability, discuss the options, and send a booking form. Perth sessions typically book 4–6 weeks in advance.
