Edinburgh is one of the most visually dramatic cities in Europe for family photography. The ancient volcanic landscape of Holyrood Park — 822 acres of grassland, crags, and lochs pressed right against the old city — gives sessions a scale and wildness that is unlike any urban park in England. Arthur's Seat rises behind every frame.
Away from the volcanic drama, Edinburgh offers an extraordinary range of alternative settings. The 70-acre Royal Botanic Garden is pastoral and intimate. Portobello Beach is one of Britain's finest urban beaches. Cramond's tidal estuary has a romantic wildness at low tide. Each neighbourhood — Stockbridge, Morningside, Marchmont — has its own character of Georgian and Victorian stone that works as a backdrop simply by walking through it.
I photograph families with patience and a light touch — following the children, working with the natural energy of the place and the people, making photographs that feel like a true record of who your family is in Edinburgh right now.

Holyrood Park is my first choice — the combination of rocky volcanic landscape, wide grassland, and views of the city is extraordinary. For gentler terrain with smaller children, the Royal Botanic Garden offers 70 acres of pastoral calm. Portobello is perfect for beach sessions. Cramond's tidal causeway and estuary give a wild, romantic edge to portraits that feels entirely different from the city parks.
The lower slopes of Arthur's Seat — particularly the path along the Queen's Drive and the climbing approach from the St Margaret's Loch side — are very manageable for young families. The summit climb itself is more suited to older children and adults. I can plan a route appropriate to your family's ages and mobility.
Yes — Portobello is a wonderful beach session location. It is best at low tide and in golden hour (especially in summer evenings and autumn mornings). The beach huts add colour and it is wide and uncrowded compared to most English coastal towns. I photograph there regularly in spring and autumn.
Yes — I cover East Lothian, Midlothian, and West Lothian including Musselburgh, Haddington, Dalkeith, Penicuik, and Linlithgow. The East Lothian beaches (North Berwick, Yellowcraig, Gullane) are also excellent for family sessions.
Edinburgh is photogenic year-round, but late spring (May-June) and autumn (September-October) are particularly beautiful. Holyrood Park has stunning autumn colour. Portobello is best in summer evenings. The Royal Botanic Garden has exceptional spring blossom. Edinburgh's northern light gives a remarkable quality in the low-sun months of autumn and winter.
