Romantic engagement sessions, family portraits and couples photography at the Serpentine, Albert Memorial, Italian Gardens and Kensington Gardens. Central London at its finest.
Central London's Royal Park
Hyde Park is 350 acres of history, water, architecture and open sky at the very centre of London. Together with its adjoining Kensington Gardens, it forms one of the world's most celebrated urban green spaces — a place where the formal grandeur of Victorian memorial architecture meets vast natural meadow and reflective lakeside calm.
For photography, the variety is extraordinary. The Serpentine's mirror-like surface at dawn captures the clouds and the willows in a canvas of reflected sky. The Albert Memorial's intricate gilded pinnacle rises against whatever weather London provides. The Italian Gardens' stone basins and fountain jets catch the summer light. In October, the plane tree avenues of Kensington Gardens turn amber and gold. Each setting is, in its own way, iconic.
I work at Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens throughout the year, constructing sessions around the quality of light. The most magical sessions happen at the golden hours — in the hour after sunrise the park is often mist-covered and almost entirely empty, and the Serpentine catches the warmest, lowest light of the day. I recommend early morning sessions particularly for engagement shoots and intimate portrait work.
Whether you are planning an engagement session, a family afternoon in Kensington Gardens, a pre-wedding portrait session near your venue on Park Lane, or a centrepiece portrait for a milestone birthday — Hyde Park will exceed every expectation.
Photography Spots
Hyde Park's 40-acre lake divides Hyde Park from Kensington Gardens and offers stunning mirrored water reflections across its full length. The northern bank with its weeping willows is exceptional at golden hour.
The ornate Gothic Albert Memorial (1872) faces the Royal Albert Hall across the Serpentine Gallery lawn. For formal, grand-scale portraiture in a uniquely Victorian setting, there is nothing comparable in London.
The formal Italian Gardens at the north end of the Long Water were commissioned by Prince Albert in 1860. Four ornamental basins, fountains and balustrades create a classically formal backdrop rare in a public London park.
The Dell Rose Garden near the Lido blooms magnificently in June and July, with hundreds of varieties creating spectacular colour. For spring and summer portrait sessions, the rose garden is simply unmissable.
J.M. Barrie's beloved Peter Pan statue (1912) stands in Kensington Gardens overlooking the Long Water — one of London's most charming photography spots, especially for children and young families.
The historic equestrian path along the southern edge, lined with massive plane trees, offers a grand avenue composition. Near Apsley House, the Hyde Park Corner gates create an imposing classical backdrop.
