Beautiful portrait and family photography in London's most elegant Royal Park — Blue Bridge lake views, Buckingham Palace backdrop, The Mall tree avenues and St James's Palace.
Central London Royal Park Photography
St James's Park is the oldest and most ornamental of London's eight Royal Parks. Located in the heart of Westminster, surrounded by Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, Horse Guards and the grand architecture of Whitehall, it offers a uniquely regal setting for portrait photography. The park's centrepiece lake, crossed by the Blue Bridge, offers one of the most famous views in London — the City skyline framed by weeping willows to the east, and Buckingham Palace framed by the ornamental lake to the west.
For portrait and family photography, St James's Park combines accessibility (it is central London's most accessible major park, a five-minute walk from Westminster Tube) with extraordinary photographic quality. The morning light from the east creates beautiful warm tones across the water. The avenue of London plane trees along The Mall is magnificent in autumn. The park's famous pelicans, resident since 1664, add a uniquely London character that children particularly love. I photograph family, engagement, couple, maternity and individual portrait sessions in St James's Park and across all of Central London.
Park Locations
St James's Park's most iconic photography spot — the Blue Bridge offers the famous view east towards the City skyline and west towards Buckingham Palace. At any time of day, this is one of the most photographed views in all of London.
The western end of St James's Park offers the classic tourist view of Buckingham Palace framed by the lake — beautifully lit in the morning as the sun rises behind the palace, and golden at evening when the façade catches the setting sun.
The grand processional avenue of The Mall, flanked by mature London plane trees and bordered by St James's Park — particularly beautiful early morning before the tourists arrive, with long shadows from the avenue trees.
St James's Park's famous pelicans, resident since 1664, nest around the lake and are frequently seen posing on rocks near the Blue Bridge. The lake and its wildfowl create beautiful, uniquely London portrait backgrounds especially for children.
Immediately north of St James's Park — the vast open ceremonial space of Horse Guards, flanked by the baroque Old Treasury Building and Downing Street, creates an extraordinarily grand urban backdrop for formal portraits.
The park café terrace on the east side of the lake, surrounded by flower beds and with views along the water — a relaxed, leafy outdoor setting away from the main tourist flow, good for informal family and couple photography.
