Family, portrait, and couples photography by the Cam — Lammas Land, Grantchester Road, and the riverside meadows of Newnham CB3.
Newnham Photography
Newnham is Cambridge's most beautiful riverside suburb — the Grantchester Road avenue, the Lammas Land meadows beside the Cam, and the village character of the streets around Newnham Croft give a portrait photography environment that is entirely specific to this part of Cambridge. The quality of light along the western Cam corridor, particularly in late afternoon and evening, is exceptional.
As a Cambridge-based photographer happy to work in every corner of the city and its villages, I know Newnham's light and spaces well. Whether it's early morning mist on the Cam at Sheep's Green, the blossom along Grantchester Road in April, or the open evening light across Lammas Land in summer — Newnham in every season produces distinctive, beautiful portrait images.
Why Newnham
Riverside Cambridge at its finest
Newnham sits along the west bank of the Cam between the Backs and Grantchester Meadows — giving access to some of the most beautiful riverside portrait territory in Cambridge without the tourist density of the city centre punting area. The Grantchester Road corridor and Lammas Land provide natural portrait light with a sense of genuine openness.
Lammas Land and the river meadows
Lammas Land — the public riverside open space between Newnham Road and the Cam — is one of Cambridge's best-kept portrait locations: a wide open meadow with the river on one side, mature trees along the bank, and the Coe Fen grazing land beyond. It is quiet, photogenic, and entirely underused as a portrait setting.
The Grantchester Road tree canopy
The long avenue of mature trees along Grantchester Road is one of Cambridge's most distinctive residential streetscapes — the canopy provides excellent dappled portrait light from spring through autumn, and the road itself is wide and quiet enough for portrait work without traffic intrusion.
Newnham Croft and the village feel
Newnham retains a character genuinely distinct from most of Cambridge's inner suburbs — the Victorian and Edwardian residential streets, the Newnham village quality of the area around Grantchester Street, and the proximity to the river create a neighbourhood portrait context that feels rooted and specific rather than generic.

Lammas Land
The broad riverside meadow between Newnham Road and the Cam — one of Cambridge's most photogenic open spaces for portrait work, with the river, the mature bank trees, and the open sky providing a complete portrait environment within minutes of the centre.
Grantchester Road riverside walk
The footpath and cycleway along the Cam south of Lammas Land — into Coe Fen and towards Grantchester Meadows — gives a long riverine portrait corridor with changing light quality at each bend of the river. Blue flag irises in May–June are exceptional.
Newnham Croft area
The residential streets and green spaces around Newnham Croft — the Newnham village character streets of Grantchester Street and Malting Lane — give an intimate, neighbourhood portrait setting particularly suited to family and individual portraits wanting a rooted-in-Cambridge quality.
Coe Fen & Sheep's Green
The Sheep's Green and Coe Fen grazing commons between Lammas Land and the Mill Pond give broad, open common land with the Cam running through it — one of the few places in Cambridge where you can achieve a genuinely pastoral portrait within five minutes of the city centre.
Newnham College gardens
Newnham College has one of Cambridge's finest college gardens — the herbaceous borders, the orchard, and the mature woodland gardens. Access requires college cooperation; I can advise on timing and any photography access considerations.
Lammas Land is the most flexible starting point — it has parking nearby, is within walking distance of the Grantchester Road corridor, and gives immediate access to both the river and the open meadow. From there we can walk to Coe Fen, Sheep's Green, or north along the riverside towards the Mill Road area.
Yes — Lammas Land and the river walk are excellent for families with children because they are open, safe, and genuinely interesting to children. The river, the open meadow, and the trees give children something to engage with naturally, which consistently produces better portrait images than asking children to stand still and pose.
Easily — Grantchester Meadows is a 15–20 minute walk south along the Cam from Lammas Land, making a combined Newnham–Grantchester session entirely feasible within a 1.5–2 hour session. This is one of the most popular combinations for Cambridge couples and families wanting a full riverside portrait experience.
Yes — several college grounds are within photography-friendly access of Newnham, subject to college cooperation. I have experience working in and around Cambridge colleges and can advise on which offer the best portrait access for your specific requirements.
