Trumpington Meadows Country Park is one of the most ambitious new green spaces created in Cambridge in decades — wide wildflower meadows beside the River Cam, chalk grassland, wetland habitats, and open riverside trails. It is genuinely beautiful and produces portrait images with a naturalistic quality that Cambridge's historic parks cannot achieve at the same scale.
Nine Wells — a rare chalk spring landscape
Nine Wells Local Nature Reserve is one of the most unusual natural habitats in Cambridgeshire — a cluster of chalk springs feeding a chalk stream, surrounded by ancient woodland and chalk grassland. The water-margin habitats, the woodland shade, and the chalk stream itself produce completely distinctive portrait backgrounds unavailable anywhere else in the Cambridge area.
The River Cam at Trumpington — less visited, more beautiful
The Cam south of the city at Trumpington — particularly along the Meadows riverside trail — has a wilder, more open quality than the city-centre Backs. The broad riverside meadow, the pollarded willows, and the open sky above the flat floodplain give a classic Cambridge river portrait without the tourist boat traffic.

Trumpington's expansion — particularly around the Hobson Square and Trumpington Meadows developments — has brought a large number of young families to the southern Cambridge suburbs. Trumpington Meadows Country Park
The new Country Park south-west of Trumpington — wildflower meadows, chalk grassland, wetland, and Cam riverside trails. The park is large enough for a full session with varied backgrounds without repetition, and the wildflower areas in June–July are particularly spectacular for portrait work.
Nine Wells Local Nature Reserve
Nine Wells LNR — the chalk spring complex on the south side of Trumpington — is one of Cambridgeshire's most distinctive natural habitats: chalk springs, chalk stream, ancient woodland, and chalk grassland. Photography access is unrestricted; the water margin environments and the woodland edge produce portraits genuinely unlike any other Cambridge location.
River Cam at Trumpington Meadows
The Cam riverbank along the eastern edge of Trumpington Meadows gives a broad, open riverside portrait setting — the pollarded willows, the long river view north towards the city, and the open floodplain meadow behind. Early morning in summer with the mist on the water is extraordinary.
Hobson's Brook & Byron's Pool
Hobson's Brook runs through the southern Trumpington area towards Byron's Pool Local Nature Reserve — a sequence of willow-lined water bodies and meadow grassland giving a quieter, more intimate portrait landscape than the main Country Park. Byron's Pool itself is one of the most beautiful small local reserves near Cambridge.
Trumpington Park & Ride green corridor
The green corridor running along the Barton Road boundary of Trumpington gives avenue tree and hedgerow portrait settings useful for vehicle-free portrait walks within the southern suburbs — less distinctive than the Country Park but convenient for evening family sessions without a long walk to the main sites.

Is Trumpington Meadows Country Park good for family sessions?+
Yes — it is one of the best locations in the Cambridge area for family portrait sessions. The scale gives plenty of variety without requiring long walks, the wildflower areas in summer are strikingly beautiful for images, and the Cam riverside gives that classic Cambridge quality. Children respond well to the open space and natural environment.
How does Nine Wells work as a portrait location?+
Nine Wells is a small but very distinctive reserve — best visited for sessions where you want a genuinely natural, ecological-quality setting rather than a park or playing field. The chalk spring landscape, the mixed woodland, and the chalk grassland can all be used within a 30–40 minute walk. It is particularly valuable as a second location within a Trumpington session.
Can we combine Trumpington with Grantchester Meadows in one session?+
Yes — Grantchester Meadows is approximately 1 mile north along the Cam from Trumpington Meadows Country Park, accessible by riverside footpath. Combining both in a longer session (1.5–2 hours) is very feasible and gives the widest possible variety of riverside Cambridge portrait settings.
Is Trumpington convenient for families near Addenbrooke's or Biomedical Campus?+
Yes — Trumpington is immediately south of the Addenbrooke's/Cambridge Biomedical Campus area. Sessions timed around work patterns — evening sessions starting at 6–7pm in summer, morning sessions at 8–9am — work very well for families in the southern CB2 area.
