Family, portrait, and couples photography in Sawston and South Cambridgeshire — the Granta valley, the village, and the South Cambs countryside.
Sawston Photography
Sawston is South Cambridgeshire's largest and most characterful village — on the chalk plateau south of Cambridge, with the River Granta valley to the east, the Gog Magog Hills rising to the north, and the open countryside of the South Cambridgeshire plateau in every other direction. It is a natural centre for portrait photography across a 10-mile radius of the southern Cambridge area.
For families in Sawston, Whittlesford, Duxford, Great Shelford, and the southern CB22 area, a local portrait session means no city travel — and access to one of the most consistently beautiful pastoral river valleys in Cambridgeshire, all within 3 miles of the village green.
Why Sawston
The Granta valley — South Cambs at its most pastoral
The River Granta runs through the southern Cambridgeshire chalk country, and the valley between Sawston and Pampisford — and west towards Babraham — gives a pastoral river landscape with willow-lined banks, wildflower meadows, and the typical gentle roll of South Cambs countryside. For portrait photography, the Granta valley gives warm, natural landscape light in a setting genuinely typical of this part of England.
Sawston village character
Sawston is South Cambridgeshire's largest village and has a genuine village character distinctive from the Cambridge suburbs — the village green area, the older residential streets, and the proximity to the open countryside of the South Cambs plateau give family portrait sessions a rooted, specific aesthetic.
Convenient location — A1301 corridor
Sawston sits on the A1301 south of Cambridge — accessible from Saffron Walden, Great Shelford, Stapleford, and Whittlesford as well as Cambridge. For families in the southern CB22 and southern CB2 area, a Sawston session means no travel into the city and no parking challenges.
South Cambridgeshire countryside — village to countryside in minutes
From Sawston, the open chalk arable countryside of the South Cambridgeshire plateau is within a 5-minute drive in any direction — the Gog Magog hills to the north, the Granta valley to the east, and the southern plateau towards Whittlesford and Duxford. The landscape within this radius gives a range of portrait settings from village green to open country.

Locations
Sawston village green & surrounds
The village green, the Mill Lane area, and the older residential streets of Sawston give a classic South Cambs village portrait setting — useful for family portraits wanting a rooted-in-the-community character rather than a park or countryside setting.
Granta valley — Sawston to Babraham
The River Granta between Sawston and Babraham — the riverside meadows, the willow-lined banks, and the chalk arable fields rising from the valley — gives a genuinely rural portrait landscape specific to this part of Cambridgeshire. Best in morning light and in the long summer evenings.
Sawston Hall grounds
Sawston Hall is an important Tudor manor — the gardens and grounds give a historic house portrait setting within the village. Access for portrait photography outside public open days requires advance arrangement; I can advise on access. The exterior and grounds are usable from the public road.
Whittlesford & the Cam valley edge
Whittlesford, 2 miles south, sits on the River Cam (locally the Rhee) — the riverside at Whittlesford Bridge and the Cam valley south of Sawston give additional riparian portrait territory accessible from Sawston within a short drive or cycle.
Gog Magog Hills — 10 minutes north
The Gog Magog Hills (Wandlebury Country Park) are 10 minutes north of Sawston — giving elevated, open chalk downland portrait terrain with panoramic Cambridge and South Cambs views. A Sawston session can easily begin locally and extend to Wandlebury at golden hour within a 2-hour session.
The Granta valley riverside to the east of the village is the strongest dedicated portrait landscape. Within the village, the green area and the older village streets give a rooted community character. Sawston Hall grounds offer a historic house option. For the widest landscape variety, a session combining the village and the Granta valley works best.
Yes — Whittlesford bridge and the Cam riverside 2 miles south, and Duxford village green 3 miles south, are both easy additions to a Sawston area session. A South Cambridgeshire village session can cover Sawston, Whittlesford, and — if timing allows — the Gog Magog Hills in a single 1.5–2 hour extended session.
Yes — Saffron Walden, Great Shelford, Stapleford, Linton, Haverhill, and all of the South Cambridgeshire district are within my regular working area. I am familiar with the best portrait settings throughout the South Cambs countryside and can advise on the optimal location for your specific requirements.
The Granta valley is finest in late spring (May–June, wildflowers and the full leaf canopy) and in September–October (harvest and autumn colour). Village sessions work at any time. The open plateau countryside is at its most atmospheric in the low winter light, but the spring and summer versatility is broadest for families.
Contact me with your preferred dates, the type of session, and any specific locations you'd like to use. I'll confirm availability, discuss your preferred South Cambs locations in detail, and send a booking form and deposit invoice. Spring and summer sessions book 4–8 weeks ahead.
