The light here is extraordinary: dry, crystalline and intensely directional, it turns white walls to pearl and throws dramatic shadows across the stone terraces. Oia is Santorini's most iconic village — a cascade of white buildings and blue-domed churches on the northernmost cliff of the caldera, famous across the world for its sunsets. The narrow pedestrian lanes, the carved-cave restaurants, the painted windows — everything here frames a photograph. The highest point of the caldera rim runs through the villages of Imerovigli and Firostefani — quieter than Oia, but with arguably the most dramatic vertigo-inducing views straight down to the dark blue bay. Cliff-edge terraces, cave hotel suites, private infinity pools overlooking the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni: this is the Santorini of deep romance and genuine drama.
Fira & the Capital
Energy, Colour & the Cable Car
Fira is the capital of Santorini, a mix of traditional whitewash and lively streets, with a cable car descending to the old port below the cliffs. The Archaeological Museum, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral and the clifftop promenade all provide spectacular backdrops. Fira pairs best with earlier coverage — the bustle of the day, the ceremony, the cocktail hour — and then a journey north to Oia for the golden-hour portraits.

September on Santorini
Perfect Timing, Softened Light
July and August are peak season — brilliant sun but very hot and very busy. By September, the light softens slightly, the heat is more comfortable, the island is a little quieter, and the late sunsets push golden hour later into the evening. September and early October are the ideal time for Santorini wedding photography: all the colour and drama, with more comfortable working conditions and a backdrop that feels genuinely spacious.

Santorini Wedding Photography FAQs
Can we photograph at Oia for the sunset even though it is very busy?
Yes — but it requires knowing exactly where to be. I know the specific positions in and around Oia where the caldera view and the sunset are fully visible while avoiding the main tourist crowds. We also time our portrait session to take advantage of the golden light in the 30 to 40 minutes before the actual sunset, when the light is warmest but the crowds are still moving into position. The resulting photographs feel intimate and personal, not like a tourist photograph.
Is Santorini a good location for a legal UK wedding ceremony abroad?
Greece allows legal civil marriages for non-residents, though the paperwork requirements are specific and need to be arranged in advance through the Santorini town hall (or via a local wedding coordinator). Many UK couples choose to have the legal ceremony at a UK registry office before or after the trip, then hold a symbolic ceremony on the island. Either approach works well photographically — I have covered both.
What time of year is best for Santorini wedding photography?
May, June and September are my top recommendations. May and June give you comfortable temperatures, long daylight hours and slightly quieter conditions. September is perhaps the sweet spot: the summer heat breaks a little, the light becomes golden earlier, the island is less crowded, and the late sunsets push golden hour to a beautiful time of evening. July and August are possible but very hot and very busy — the photographs can still be wonderful, but the logistics are more demanding.
How do you travel to Santorini for weddings?
Direct flights run from several UK airports to Santorini (JTR) in the summer season. I always plan to arrive the day before the wedding, and I am happy to do a venue walk-through the afternoon or evening before. All travel costs are included within the package price for Santorini.
What happens if the sunset is cloudy?
Santorini sunsets are spectacular precisely because they are often dramatic — partly cloudy skies can produce some of the most extraordinary light I have ever photographed, with deep orange and pink lit from behind the clouds across the caldera. Overcast conditions at dusk can also create beautiful soft directional light for portraits. I always have a plan for whatever the sky delivers, and I have never had a Santorini session where the photographs were disappointing because of clouds.
