Maternity photography — or bump photography, as many families call it — documents the pregnancy before the baby arrives. It's one of the few occasions when people wish, later, that they'd had professional photographs taken: the physical reality of pregnancy is so temporary and so significant that going undocumented is a common regret. A good bump session takes 60–90 minutes and produces images that most people keep for life.
The optimal window for maternity photography is 28–34 weeks. By 28 weeks, the bump is clearly visible and has a beautifully round shape; before about 26 weeks, the bump may be less pronounced. After 34 weeks, increasing discomfort, fatigue, and the practicalities of moving around make longer sessions more demanding — though 35–36 week sessions work perfectly well with a shorter and less physically demanding approach.
Book at 20–24 weeks
Even though the session itself happens around 30–32 weeks, it's worth booking at 20–24 weeks to secure your preferred photographer and date. Experienced photographers in many areas fill their summer and autumn calendars months in advance.
The best maternity sessions have two things in common: the mother is comfortable, and the light is beautiful. Nothing else matters nearly as much. This sounds simple; in practice it shapes every other decision — where to shoot (locations with good natural light, ideally not requiring a long walk), what time to shoot (golden hour for outdoor sessions), and what to wear (something that allows easy movement and shows the bump).
The most common choice is a flowing dress or skirt that shows the bump clearly without restriction. Maternity-specific photography dresses (bodycon, fitted at the sides, with stretchy good drape) produce the most clearly defined bump shape. Simple, solid colours photograph most cleanly — white and cream in natural light, deeper jewel tones in woodland or evening sessions.
Including a partner in the session? Complement rather than match: if the expectant mother is wearing a light floral dress, a simple plain shirt in a neutral tone works well alongside it. Avoid matching outfits, which can look more formal than warm.
Most maternity sessions include at least some images with the partner — hands on the bump, holding each other, walking together — which add emotional context and document the shared anticipation of both parents. Children who are about to become older siblings are also wonderful to include: the image of a 3-year-old kissing their future sibling's estimated location is hard to replicate and universally treasured.
Gloucestershire and the surrounding Cotswolds area offer some of England's most beautiful locations for maternity photography: rolling hills, ancient stone villages, unspoilt countryside that photographs immediately and timelessly. Popular locations include the Cotswold Water Park (broad water meadows and flat open skies), Westonbirt Arboretum (extraordinary autumn colour and bluebell woodland in spring), Painswick Rococo Garden, and the Slaughters for stone village backdrops.
What if I feel self-conscious about being photographed?
This is one of the most common concerns and one worth addressing honestly: pregnancy is one of the few times when many people who normally dislike being photographed find the session enjoyable, because the subject is genuinely beautiful and the photographer's job is to show that. Most people leave a maternity session glad they did it.
Can I see the images before they're edited?
Most photographers don't share unedited RAW files — the polished result is part of what you're paying for. You'll typically receive a proofing gallery 1–2 weeks after the session.
What happens if the baby comes early?
This is rare before 28 weeks, but if it happens before a planned session your photographer should be understanding about rescheduling or converting the booking to a newborn session. Most professional photographers have policies covering this — check before you book.
Do I need makeup for the session?
You don't need to, but many people choose to. Natural makeup that you'd wear to a special occasion works perfectly well. Heavy stage makeup can look unusual in natural outdoor light.
I photograph maternity sessions across Cambridge, East Anglia, the Cotswolds, and surrounding counties. Sessions at locations of your choice, or I can recommend the best spots for your county and season.
