Second Pregnancy Maternity Photos: Including Your Toddler

Second and third pregnancy maternity sessions have an extra dimension: there is already a child in the world who is about to have their family changed forever. Including your toddler or older child in the maternity session creates a document of that transition — a before-and-after that children often treasure when they are old enough to understand it.

Managing a toddler on session day

Realistic expectations are essential. A toddler or young child will not stay still, will not take direction predictably, and may have a complete meltdown partway through. This is normal and manageable — here is how:

• ◆Timing: Book the session around the child's best time of day — usually after a nap, mid-morning for morning nappers. Avoid meal times or overtired periods.
• ◆Familiar snacks and favourite toy: Bring comfort items and snacks for between shots. If the child is holding a favourite item, often they relax into the session.
• ◆Start with the child-involving shots: Use the child's energy and novelty interest early, before they habituate to the 'boring' standing around.
• ◆Let the imperfection exist: Some of the most loved maternity images from second pregnancies are the ones that show the toddler not cooperating — chaos is authentic.
• ◆Separate shots after: Once the child has been released to play or a second adult, do the formal bump portraits with just the parents.

Poses that work with children

• ◆Child kissing the bump: One of the most timeless maternity images. The child's curiosity about the bump, framed in a kiss or touch.
• ◆Child 'talking to' the bump: Young children often naturally do this — photograph it when it happens naturally rather than prompting.
• ◆Family cuddle: Parents and child in a loose group cuddle — imperfect, warm, real.
• ◆Child sitting on parent's lap, bump visible: Natural seating position with the pregnancy incorporated.
• ◆Child standing next to, pointing to, or measuring against the bump: Light and playful. Works well with children 2–5.

Preparing the child

Talk to the child in age-appropriate terms about what the session will involve. "A photographer is coming to take pictures of our family" is sufficient for most children under 3. For older children, building anticipation ("you get to be in special photos") can help. Never tell a child they "have to" behave — this creates resistance. Instead, frame it as something fun happening.
