Cambridgeshire offers an unusually varied selection of engagement photo settings within a 20-mile radius of the city centre — from the iconic riverside architecture of The Backs to open chalk downland, ancient woodland, and quaint fen villages. Here are ten of our favourite locations for engagement sessions in and around Cambridge.
The riverbank behind the colleges — King's, Clare, Trinity, St John's — with the complete Cambridge skyline reflected in the Cam. Arrive before 7am in summer to beat punters and tourists. The light on King's Chapel crossing from soft pink to warm gold within 30 minutes makes this the most photogenic hour in Cambridge.
A 45-minute walk south along the Cam from central Cambridge, or a short drive. Open meadows with the sound of birdsong, wildflowers from May through July, and ancient willow pollards along the river. The orchard in Grantchester village — of Rupert Brooke 'honey still for tea' fame — adds a literary and romantic context.
Hill fort and chalk downland 5 miles south of Cambridge with a managed bluebell season in late April to early May. The ancient beech woodland provides a canopy for filtered-light portraits. The open hilltop gives wide sky compositions with the Gog Magog hills rolling in the background.
A private punting session — booked in the early morning before tourist traffic begins — on the stretch from the Mill Pond through the Backs and under the Bridge of Sighs. The combination of stone bridges, college backs, and the couple in a punt is the most distinctively Cambridge engagement photograph possible.
40 acres of curated garden on Hills Road with 8,000 plant species. Roses peak in June, dahlias in September. The 1846 glasshouse range and garden lake provide different backdrops within a compact space. Couples photography access requires a Botanic Garden permit — book well in advance.
The long avenue of plane trees on Jesus Green provides a straight-line perspective shot that is quintessentially English. Midsummer Common adjacent to the river offers open-air compositions toward the city skyline. Both are accessible without prior booking.
The highest point in Cambridge — which in this flat city is enough to give a full panorama over the ancient core of the medieval town, the college towers, and the surrounding fen. Best at golden hour when the warm light catches the cluster of spires and chimney pots.
A pretty Cambridgeshire village 3 miles east of the city with thatched cottages, a medieval church, and a reach of the Cam used for college rowing. The riverside path and pub garden at the end of a long summer evening give an unhurried, distinctly English engagement session.
Former gravel pits north of Cambridge transformed into a country park with open lakes, reed beds and mixed woodland. The wide water reflections at dawn or dusk provide landscape-scale backgrounds unusual for the flat Cambridgeshire setting.
15 miles north of Cambridge, Ely's octagon tower is visible for 20 miles across the fens. The cathedral west front and the medieval street of the Sacrist's Gate provide architectural richness. The Great Ouse riverside below the south bank gives sweeping meadow views back toward the city.
Some Cambridge locations require prior permission for photography — notably the college grounds (permission required from the relevant college Porters' Lodge) and the University Botanic Garden. The Backs are public riverside paths but the inner college courts require access permission. Always check in advance so that there are no surprises on the day.
The best season for Cambridge engagement photos depends on what you want: bluebell woodland is April to early May; the rose garden in the Botanic Garden peaks in late June; the Backs look their most colourful in May when the Judas tree and copper beech are in full colour; autumn colours in the avenue trees are typically the second half of October.
