Edinburgh is one of the most architecturally magnificent cities in Europe — a medieval Old Town of close-packed tenements and closes on a volcanic ridge, a Georgian New Town of classical terraces and crescents to the north, and Edinburgh Castle on its dramatic plug of volcanic rock commanding the city from above. For wedding photography, Edinburgh offers a density of architectural drama within a compact walkable area that very few cities anywhere in the world can match.
Edinburgh Castle occupies the summit of Castle Rock — a 130-metre volcanic plug with sheer cliff faces on three sides. The castle is visible from most of the city and dominates every skyline view from the south, west, and north. The Castle Esplanade — the large open area directly in front of the castle gates — gives wide open views back down the Royal Mile and across the city. Photography on the esplanade with the castle rising behind is one of the city's most powerful formal compositions.
For interior photography, the castle's St Margaret's Chapel (the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, built around 1130) is licensed for civil ceremonies — one of the most historically charged small ceremony spaces in Scotland.
Edinburgh weather note: Edinburgh is famously unpredictable — the city receives 700mm of rain annually and can produce four seasons in one day. The overcast, soft light typical of Scottish weather is actually excellent for portrait photography — it eliminates harsh shadows and produces even, flattering illumination. The dramatic low winter light and occasional haar (sea fog rolling in from the Firth of Forth) create atmospheric and distinctive images that Edinburgh in sunshine rarely produces.
Edinburgh has a rich selection of wedding venues: Prestonfield House (Georgian mansion and peacocks); The Scotsman Hotel (former newspaper building, grand marble staircase); Surgeons' Hall; Dynamic Earth; Manderstoun House (30 minutes from Edinburgh); and the city's historic churches including Canongate Kirk (where several Royal Family members married). The Edinburgh Register Office on Victoria Street is also an approved premises venue with a beautiful Georgian interior.
Edinburgh's combination of medieval castle, volcanic hillscape, and Georgian architecture makes it one of the most photographically rich wedding destinations in Britain. I cover Edinburgh weddings from Cambridge — enquire to discuss your Edinburgh date and venue.
