Ireland offers some of the most dramatic and diverse wedding photography landscapes in the world — ancient limestone karst, Atlantic cliff faces, druid megalithic monuments, Georgian cities, ruined castle keeps rising from green fields, and the wildest coastline in western Europe. For UK couples, Ireland is just 1–2 hours by flight from most major cities, making it one of the most accessible dramatic destinations on offer. This guide covers the principal regions and locations for wedding and elopement photography across the island.
The Wild Atlantic Way runs 2,500km along Ireland's west coast from Donegal in the north to Cork in the south. For photography, it is one of the world's great coastal routes — each region distinct, all dramatically beautiful. Key photography zones along the route:
Ireland's Atlantic climate means changeable weather in any month. But Irish weather has a quality that is different from constant greyness: it changes rapidly, often producing the extraordinary interplay of storm light, sun shafts, and rainbow arcs that Ireland is known for. A session in overcast Irish light, or just after rain, often produces photographs with a dramatic, painterly atmosphere that clear-sky Mediterranean sessions cannot replicate. The green of the landscape after rain is incomparable. Embracing Ireland's weather rather than hoping for Mediterranean conditions is the key to loving the results.
To marry in the Republic of Ireland, both parties must give at least three months' notice to the HSE Registrar. A Notification of Intention to Marry form is submitted in person at a register office; you cannot notify by post or online. After notification, you receive a Marriage Registration Form (MRF) which must be present at the ceremony. The ceremony must be conducted by a registered solemniser. Many couples handle the legal registration at home in the UK and have a symbolic ceremony in Ireland — this is widely done and completely valid.
I travel to Ireland for destination elopements and wedding photography — whether at the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, Kerry, or an Irish castle venue. Get in touch to discuss your Ireland session.
