Pembrokeshire's coastline is among the most spectacular in Europe — 186 miles of National Park boundary meeting some of the wildest and most beautiful sea cliffs, coves, and headlands in Britain. For couples seeking an elopement in Wales with coastal drama and genuine sense of remoteness, Pembrokeshire offers something unavailable elsewhere in the country.
The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the only coastal national park in Britain. Its combination of Atlantic-facing cliffs, sheltered estuary woodlands, ancient Iron Age promontory forts, and Celtic Christian pilgrimage chapels gives it a depth that purely mountain or moorland elopement destinations lack. The light on Pembrokeshire's western headlands — particularly on the peninsula around St Davids — is genuinely different to the rest of Wales: softer, brighter, with the Atlantic shimmer from three directions.
Pembrokeshire also benefits from a relatively dry microclimate compared to Snowdonia. Summer sessions are often reliably beautiful, and the winter storms bring dramatic crashing sea imagery. The coast path runs 186 miles and is entirely accessible — no specialist equipment needed for the vast majority of outstanding locations.
The peninsula north of Britain's smallest city ends at St Davids Head, a rocky promontory with Bronze Age burial chambers, exposed granite outcrops, and unobstructed views to the Bishops and Clerks rocks. Whitesands Bay below is a sweeping pale sand beach with turquoise water that, on calm summer days, resembles the Mediterranean. Dawn sessions here are exceptional — the eastern headlands glow against a still, bright sea.
Barafundle Bay is consistently voted one of the finest beaches in Britain. Accessible only on foot through Stackpole Estate woods, it is completely free of development — no car park, no cafe, no facilities — just a perfect crescent of sand enclosed by limestone cliffs. The walk through Stackpole's mixed woodland before descending to the beach creates ideal pre-ceremony portrait opportunities. Early morning, the beach is frequently empty.
The northern Pembrokeshire coast between Fishguard and St Davids has the park's most dramatic sea cliff scenery — sheer drops to seal-inhabited rocks, the lighthouse at Strumble Head, and the ancient hill fort at Garn Fawr above the headland. Very few visitors outside summer. The light on north-facing cliffs in afternoon sun from the west creates exceptional directional conditions.
The lily ponds at Bosherston — reed-fringed, reflective, and strangely peaceful given their proximity to an active army range — flow into the small sea inlet at Broad Haven South. Nearby, St Govan's Chapel is a medieval hermit's cell wedged into a limestone cliff fissure above the sea, reachable by steep steps. The chapel is small, ancient, and extraordinarily photogenic — one of the most unusual ceremony settings in Wales.
The sheltered inlet of Solva is one of Pembrokeshire's most picturesque harbour villages. The Gribin headland above gives panoramic views of the creek and the St Brides Bay coast beyond. The combination of whitewashed cottages, coloured boats, and the sweep of the harbour is more intimate than the exposed headlands — ideal for couples wanting harbour and water without the scale of open coast.
Flowing dresses photograph exceptionally well on coastal headlands — the wind off the Atlantic creates natural movement that no studio fan can replicate. Bring wind protection for practical comfort between shots. Footwear matters: the coast path is rocky and uneven, so flat shoes or low heels are advisable for the walk; some couples bring a second pair of shoes for the photography. Soft blue, seafoam green, white, and warm cream all work beautifully against the sea and limestone. Avoid clothing that matches the grey of the cliffs.
As elsewhere in England and Wales, outdoor ceremonies require a licensed venue. Pembrokeshire's registry offices are in Haverfordwest and Pembroke Dock. Licensed venues in the park include Slebech Park Estate (on the Eastern Cleddau), Caer Onnen Bay (near Tenby), and St Brides Spa Hotel (Saundersfoot). Many couples combine a licensed hotel ceremony with an immediate coast path blessing and photography session in the same afternoon.
