Exmoor National Park — straddling the Somerset and Devon border — is one of England's most underrated wedding and elopement destinations. Heather moorland, wooded combes, steep coastal cliffs, and ancient villages combine to create a landscape of extraordinary variety and romance. For couples seeking dramatic, untamed beauty far from Dartmoor's crowds, Exmoor offers an intimate alternative that few photographers have fully explored.
Exmoor's photographic character changes with every season. In late summer, the moorland turns amber and purple with heather and bracken — a palette that few places in England can match. Autumn brings golden woodland canopies along the deep-cut river valleys. Winter brings low mist rolling across Dunkery Beacon, England's highest point outside the Lake District. Spring floods the coombes with wild garlic and bluebells. There is never a bad season to photograph here, only different moods.
The coastline is equally compelling. The Valley of Rocks near Lynton, Foreland Point, and the cliffs above Porlock Weir all offer vertiginous backdrops with the Bristol Channel stretching away to Wales. Golden hour on the Exmoor coast rivals anything Cornwall offers — with far fewer visitors in the frame.
An exclusive-use country house near Wheddon Cross with moorland views stretching to the Bristol Channel. Intimate, private, and genuinely remote — ideal for small weddings that want the Exmoor experience without compromise.
A Georgian country house in the Brendon Valley, deep in Exmoor's wooded interior. The private river, ancient woodland, and historic house create a setting that feels entirely separate from the modern world.
At the meeting point of the Somerset Levels and Exmoor's coastal fringe, this farm venue offers barn ceremonies with sea views across the Bristol Channel — a less-visited but visually exceptional part of the region.
The thatched village of Selworthy — all white-painted cottages set against a wooded hillside — is one of England's most photogenic settlements. Available for small ceremonies and portrait sessions, with Allerford's packhorse bridge a classic Somerset landmark.
The tiny harbour at Porlock Weir, tucked between the moor and the sea, is one of Exmoor's most characterful locations. Elopement ceremonies on the shingle beach or harbour wall create images unlike anywhere else in Somerset.
For couples who want to elope or hold a small intimate ceremony, Exmoor is extraordinary. The moorland around Dunkery Beacon (at 519m, the highest point on Exmoor) offers 360-degree views on clear days — the Brecon Beacons to the north, Dartmoor to the south, and the entire Bristol Channel stretching east. Sunrise elopements here in autumn, when mist fills the valleys below, are among the most memorable shoots possible.
The Valley of Rocks near Lynton is a dramatic natural amphitheatre of castellated rock formations above the sea. Wild goats roam freely here, adding to the otherworldly quality. The coastal path east towards Foreland Point hugs cliffs too steep for most visitors to follow — creating naturally private locations for intimate ceremonies.
Tarr Steps — the ancient clapper bridge across the River Barle — is one of England's oldest structures and a genuinely magical woodland location for quiet, documentary-style elopement photography.
The Exmoor weather is famously unpredictable. The moor captures Atlantic cloud rolling in from the Bristol Channel, and dramatic skies are the norm rather than the exception. This is actually excellent for photography — moody light, moving cloud, and occasional rain create atmosphere that clear-sky shooting can't replicate.
The best light on the open moor is at golden hour: an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset, when warm side-lighting textures the heather and the landscape has a three-dimensional depth. Midday in summer can flatten the moorland completely.
Access is excellent on foot but some locations require significant walking. The coastal path between Lynton and Porlock Weir is one of Britain's most demanding stretches — beautiful but physically challenging. Venues near Minehead, Dulverton, and Dunster are more easily accessible for guests travelling from further afield.
Dunster is one of Somerset's most visually complete medieval villages. Dominated by its hilltop castle — now managed by the National Trust — and with a 17th-century yarn market at its centre, the village offers a well-preserved historic streetscape that is genuinely rare in England. The approach road lined with chestnuts, the castle gardens, and the packhorse bridge at the edge of the village all make excellent photography locations.
Dunster Castle itself hosts weddings through the National Trust — ceremonies in the historic rooms with garden access for portraits on the terraces above the village are available.
