Fitzwilliam College Cambridge occupies a special position among Cambridge wedding venues: it is the most architecturally striking of the city's post-war colleges, set in generous grounds away from the city-centre tourist crowds, and consistently underestimated as a beautiful, individual place in which to get married. This guide covers the college's wedding spaces, portrait locations, and what to expect as a photographer there.
Fitzwilliam was founded in 1869 as a non-collegiate institution for students who couldn't afford the traditional college system — a radically progressive approach in Victorian Cambridge. It became a full college of the university in 1966. The current site on Storey's Way, west of the city centre, was developed through the 20th century with a series of notable architectural commissions: the Chapel by David Roberts (1991) is a well-regarded example of late-20th-century sacred architecture, and the Auditorium (2004) forms the centrepiece of the modern college campus.
Do not confuse Fitzwilliam College with the Fitzwilliam Museum — they are completely separate institutions, despite having been founded by the same benefactor (Viscount Fitzwilliam). The museum is on Trumpington Street; the college is on Storey's Way near the Huntingdon Road.
Fitzwilliam College holds a wedding licence for civil ceremonies and receptions. The main event spaces available for weddings include:
Photographing a wedding at Fitzwilliam is a very different experience from working at, say, King's or Trinity. The character is modern rather than medieval, the scale is human rather than monumental, and the spaces are more intimate. This is not a disadvantage — many couples find the older colleges overwhelming for a personal, private wedding day.
The key photographic elements at Fitzwilliam:
Photography note: unlike the older colleges, Fitzwilliam imposes relatively few restrictions on photographers. Tripods are generally permitted in the chapel and grounds, and there is flexibility on flash use in some spaces. Confirm the current rules with the events team when planning your day — restrictions do change and it is always better to know what you are working with in advance.
Couples choosing between Fitzwilliam and the older city-centre colleges should think carefully about the character they want their wedding to have. The historic colleges — King's, Clare, Trinity, Queens' — offer medieval and Renaissance grandeur that is globally famous. They are extraordinary, but they are also public places: tourists pass the chapel gates constantly, the streets are crowded in summer, and the logistical constraints (parking, noise, photography rules) are significant.
Fitzwilliam offers a quieter, more private experience on a beautiful, modern campus where the event team is wholly focused on your wedding. The west-Cambridge location is also more accessible by car than the city-centre colleges — for guests travelling from outside Cambridge, this matters.
Most Cambridge colleges require an alumni or current student connection to hold a wedding on the premises. Fitzwilliam College events can be booked by alumni of the college; enquiries from couples without an alumni connection should be directed to the college events team, who can advise on whether external bookings are currently being accepted.
Many Fitzwilliam alumni have a strong sense of attachment to the college — its history as an egalitarian institution means it attracts couples for whom the college has genuine personal significance. This emotional connection shows in the photographs in a way that is hard to replicate at venues chosen purely for their visual profile.
Unlike the city-centre colleges, Fitzwilliam is within easy reach of some excellent portrait locations that are not inside the college itself:
